Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 IPL review

Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 IPL review

What is it?

The Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 uses intense pulsed light energy (IPL) to damage and disable your hair follicle, slowing and preventing hair regrowth. Periodic top-up treatments keep your skin smooth. Learn more about how home IPL works here.

First impressions

The packaging is professional, informative, attractive, compact and neat. It’s sturdy and economical too. I like that there’s very little plastic because the storage pouch keeps everything covered, clean and together.

What’s in the box?

  • Braun silk-expert Pro 5 IPL with body attachment
  • Fixed power cord and base station pack
  • Power lead and plugs (UK & Australia)
  • Precision attachment (some models)
  • Wide attachment (some models)
  • Venus razor and blade (differs per model)
  • User guide

The white and gold IPL device is sophisticated and refined. I like the clean lines, subtle curves and gold accents. It’s compact and lightweight, but feels solid, quality – exactly what you expect from Braun.

Before you start

Before you start zapping away, first read the user manual and do a skin sensitivity test.

The user manual is a quick and easy read. It’s well organised and spaced-out, with helpful diagrams. You’ll find the safe skin tone and hair colour chart, a diagram of the IPL device, a brief explanation of how IPL works, contraindications and warnings, how to use it, about your skin patch test, the treatment plan, cleaning and storage, possible side effects and a troubleshooting guide.

The user guide booklet has 13 pages of easy to read information in English.

Spend time checking the important safety information, warnings and reasons you should not use the Braun Silk-expert Pro 5. These include being pregnant, having epilepsy, taking photosensitising medications, skin conditions, on tattoos or after skin peels. Learn more about IPL contraindications here to ensure it’s safe for you.

You must follow the guidelines on tanning and sun exposure too, to keep your skin safe and avoid side effects. Braun advise:

✔️ DO

  • Wait 7 days after sunbathing before treatments, or wait for your tan to fade
  • After your treatments, avoid the sun for 7 days
  • Cover up and use a sunscreen of SPF 15+ after your treatments to avoid unprotected sun exposure

DON’T

  • Don’t use the Braun IPL on recently tanned or sunburned skin, including artificial tans.
  • Don’t use tanning booths or solariums during your treatments

In short, during your start-up treatments it’s best to avoid tanning altogether. Both by sunlight and artificially with light or creams. There’s more on tanning and sun exposure here.

Wait 48 hours after your skin sensitivity test. If your skin is normal, crack on with your first session (but avoid the test patch until your next weekly session).

Getting started

You get a Venus razor with the Braun Pro 5 IPL for a smooth shave before your treatments
A dermaplaning tool called Hollywood Browser. These tools are excellent for cutting facial hair and removing peach fuzz.
Dermaplaning: better than shaving your face!

You can learn more detail about how to prepare for your sessions here. Shave your hairs for best results, although Braun say you can wax or epilate if you prefer. And if you’ll be zapping facial or neck hairs I recommend dermaplaning as an alternative to shaving. Learn more about all of this and about dermaplaning here, and you’ll find buy links for dermaplaning tools at the end of this review.

Here’s a quick summary on how to use the Braun Pro 5, and there’s loads more detail in the following sections.

Just follow these steps:

  1. Shave before every treatment (unless there’s no hair left!)
  2. Plug in and press the flash or feather button. The 3 small intensity mode buttons shine white and you’ll hear the fan start up inside
  3. Select your intensity mode by pressing the feather button. 3 lights mean high, 2 gentle, and 1 extra-gentle.
  4. Position flat on your skin at a 90-degree angle and press the flash button.
  5. Slide to the next spot and repeat. Cover your skin in adjoining flashes avoiding overlap.

When you’re done, unplug from the mains and the Braun IPL powers down.

For this review I tested the Braun Pro 5 IPL on my full legs, extended bikini line, underarms and face. And boy is it simple, straightforward and ultrafast. It’s the fastest, safest, high-power home IPL you can buy. Here’s my feedback.

Quality & design

The Braun silk expert is a compact and elegant shape. And despite being lightweight at 285g, it feels solid and well-balanced with no creaks or cracks.

Close up photo of the quality white matt and glossy surfaces with shiny gold accent around the perfectly placed large flash button and smaller gentle mode 'feather' button. It fits perfectly in my hand.

3 photos of the Braun Pro 5 iPL with gold body attachment showing the curvy shape and smooth lines
The curvy shape and smooth lines of the Braun Pro IPL are attractive and ergonomic. The buttons on top standout against a shiny gold accent.

Even the 2 metre-long power cord feels premium. It’s fixed into the base of the device with the power pack at the other end. So, unlike the earlier models, the weight of the power pack won’t pull the cable out mid-use. There’s also a smaller 90cm cord that connects the power pack to the mains so you get the full 2-metre supple cable to play with. Use an extension cable for more flexibility.

Flexible, thick & supple. No tangles here.

The IPL lamp gives 400,000 flashes. That’s more than enough for over 200 full-body treatments of full legs, bikini line, underarms and face. So, you’ll get over 15 years’ worth of monthly full body sessions. Braun actually say the flashes should last for around 22 years. It’s superb value, you’ll never run out of flashes. You get a good 2-year manufacturer warranty too.

It’s very easy to handle around all your body, even if you have small hands. The large flash button is easy to press with fingers or thumb. And it works in a few different grips. Here’s the first:

3 photos of the Braun Pro IPL gripped snug in my palm with forefinger on the flash button.

This downwards grip keeps the cord out the way is best for gliding over large areas like legs or forearms, & for tricky bits around the bikini line

Flash windows

With all models, you get the standard matt-gold body flash window attachment. It measures 1cm by 3cm, so that’s a total flash area of 3 cm2. It’s an excellent multi-purpose window for legs, body, underarms and bikini line. But sometimes awkward to get a flash on your tache and jawline.

Luckily, with all models (excluding the PL5014) you also get a smaller white precision attachment. This flash window is 1.1cm wide by 1.5cm long with a total flash area of 1.65 cm2. It’s a particularly good fit on the upper lip and around the jawline. And works well on fingers and toes too. Some of the Braun Pro 5 models come with an extra precision attachment so you can use one for your face and the other for areas around your body.

Photos of the 2 flash windows with the Braun silk Expert Pro 5 IPL. the smaller white precision attachment and the larger gold body attachment.
The smaller white precision attachment (left) and the larger gold body attachment (right).

And finally, with the most expensive models, you also get a white wide flash window. This measures around 4 cm2 and covers a bigger surface area with each flash, so it’s faster to zap your torso and upper legs.

To change attachments, hold on the small lip & firmly pull the attachment away from the handle, then slide on the new attachment.

The flash bulb is part of the device and not the attachments. The attachments click into place over the top. They can feel a bit stubborn to remove at first until you get used to the pressure needed.

Power, eye & skin safety

The Braun Pro 5 IPL has 10 intensity levels and it operates at high IPL intensities, the maximum on level 10 being 6 J/cm2. This is one of the most powerful home-use devices (along with the Smoothskin Pure and the Lumea Prestige). This means, if you have light skin and use the higher levels, you’ll get longer-lasting results than less powerful devices. The lower intensities are for darker skin.

See also: See how the Braun Pro 5 and the Braun Pro 3 compare.

Rest assured, the Braun Pro 5 is clinically tested safe for home-use and it passes the necessary European manufacturing and safety standards for the CE mark. It’s FDA-cleared in the US too.

So, how does it protect your eyes and skin?

The two small blue lights on either side of the Braun Pro 5's long flash window are the skin tone sensors, which continuously check your skin tone as you move the device, and selct the best match IPL intensity before every flash.
Your skin must totally cover the 2 sensor windows at either side of the flash windows. They shine blue when in use.

You must hold the flash window flush against your skin so the two skin sensors are covered. If not it won’t flash. This means you can’t accidentally flash it into open-air anywhere near your eyes.

Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 IPL accredited by the skin Health Alliance

The Pro 5 also has reassuring independent accreditation from Skin Health Alliance because it’s skin-safe.

There’s an inbuilt UV filter. And the advanced skin tone sensor stops IPL flashes hurting your skin too. It’s also the reason why the Braun Pro 5 IPL is so darn simple and straightforward to use. Here’s what it does:

The Braun Pro 5 IPL's advanced blue sensor checks your skin tone before every flash but won't flash and with a red strip light if the tone is too dark.
The blue sensor checks your skin before every flash and won’t flash (shows red strip) if your tone is too dark (FitzPatrick type 6)
Close up photo of the SensoAdapt white intensity level indicators showing the medium intensity level chosen by the skin tone sensor.
If your skin is safe (FitzPatrick types 1 to 5) it automatically chooses the best of the 10 intensity levels for you!

This means it chooses the most powerful intensity that’s still safe for your skin tone. And from 10 increments versus 5 as with other IPL machines. This means a more precise match to your skin tone and the best possible results in the shortest time.

This clever tech takes all the faff and guesswork out of which intensity level to choose. Just plug-it-in and start zapping!

But what if it smarts too much?

Gentle modes for sensitive bits

IPL can smart a bit on more sensitive body areas like your bikini line and underarms. Luckily, Braun IPL has 2 additional comfort modes to adjust the intensity. They’re simple to activate.

3 photos showing a finger pressing the 'feather' mode mode to cycle through extra gentle (1 light), gentle (2 lights) and standard mode (3 lights)
Press the feather button to choose another mode. It defaults to standard (3 lights) when you power it on.

1 light means extra gentle mode. This chooses the lowest IPL intensity level 1.

2 lights mean gentle mode. This reduces the intensity so you’ll see fewer white indicator lights illuminated.

3 lights mean standard mode. The Braun IPL balances maximum power and safety for your skin tone.

Extra gentle mode adds further reassurance if you have darker skin. However, if safety and comfort for darker skin are your concern, you should consider my recommended devices for dark and black skin.

p

TIP: Braun suggest use the gentle mode for your first few sessions to get used to the treatments, but bear in mind you’ll get faster results in standard mode with the higher energy intensity levels.

It’s fast

The Braun Pro 5 IPL is one of the fastest high-power home IPLs you can buy. The flash rate is very fast at every 0.6 to 1.2 seconds, fastest on the lowest intensities. Keep the flash button pressed for continuous flashes in glide mode. After each flash glide the handset 1cm along your skin to the next position.

Hand holding the Braun Pro 5 IPL with body attachment in a comfortable grip for glide mode
A fast high-power IPL perfect for super-fast gliding flashes on legs with the body attachment.

You’ll appreciate how the compact and lightweight design is easy to handle at speed. It’s not quite a fluid motion – but it’s fast and manageable.

Braun say you can do both lower legs in 5 mins on the lowest intensity level. For me, it selected the higher intensities and one lower leg took just over 3.5 minutes. A meticulous full leg took me around 9 minutes.

I did my full body in just under 28 mins (full legs, extended bikini, underarms and face). That’s one of the fastest high-power IPLs I’ve tested. It’s beaten only by the Smoothskin Pure. So, if you don’t have much time to spare and speed is what you need most, this is a solid choice.

Treatment App

For this updated Pro there’s a newer, rebranded App called ‘Braun Silk-expert Pro’.

It has all the product information and ‘how to’ videos available on the Braun website. And the most helpful bit is where you schedule your sessions and reminders. The App even lets you change the frequency of your sessions to accommodate the switch to your top-up maintenance.

It helps a lot to remember and stick to your treatment plan so you get the best possible results.

What does it feel like?

You’ll hear the cooling fan whirring inside the device. And you’ll hear each flash ‘pop’.

The flashes are bright, but harmless to your eyes. You don’t need to buy specialist goggles or glasses. Use it in a well-lit room so the flashes don’t seem so intense. Sunglasses can help ease any irritation you might feel.

It feels warm and tingly against your skin. Some more sensitive areas, like ankles, thighs, bikini line and underarms can smart a bit. Hair is generally thicker and denser on the bikini line and underarms so these areas can be uncomfortable. Simply select gentle or extra gentle mode if it feels too intense. Sometimes starting with the more sensitive areas is easier.

Press the feature button on the top of the Braun Pro 5 IPl device to select gentle, extra gentle and back to standard power mode.
Select gentle mode if the flashes feel too intense on sensitive areas.

It’s really fast so you won’t get bored. But it still demands concentration because you must remember which areas you’ve flashed. This avoids too much overlap and missed hairy bits.

Skin redness is a common skin reaction to IPL. Your skin may also feel a bit hot and tingly. It’s normal and should wear off within 24 hours. You can cover it with a cool facecloth or ice pack. Cooling water sprays are good too, Aloe Vera gel or a non-scented moisturiser.

After your treatment, avoid things that could irritate the skin you’ve flashed. For example, using hot tubs and saunas, spanking, wearing tight-fitting clothing, using bleaching creams and perfumed or exfoliation products.

Avoid tanning and wear a SPF, 30+ ideally, if exposed to the sun! If you don’t you risk experiencing some of the rare home IPL side effects.

Schedule, effort & results

Home laser and IPL devices demand effort and commitment. There’s a start-up routine to get you to smooth, and then top-up sessions maintain your results. Your overall effort depends on the number of start-up sessions and how fast each session is. Therefore, I’ve calculated this effort based on my controlled tests, so you can compare and decide if the Braun Pro 5 is right for you.

Braun say you need between 4 to 12 weekly sessions to get to smooth and hairless skin. You may get there before 12 sessions but most people see significant results after 6. A whole body sessions takes around 30 mins. Therefore, over the start-up you’ll spend between 3 to 6 hours zapping.

No. of sessions (start-up) Time per session Total effort during start-up
6 sessions over 5 weeks
up to
12 sessions over 11 weeks
30 minutes 3 hours
to
6 hours

Once you’re there, switch to less frequent top-ups. These could be every 1 or even 2 months. After several top-ups, you’ll likely need them even less frequently. The Braun Pro asks for such a small amount of your time and effort for excellent results. It’s one of the best so easier to fit around your busy life.

What results can you expect?

Shave before every treatment, and /or between sessions as you need.

Our tester’s experience matches the advertised results. They noticed slower leg hair growth after 2 sessions. It got softer and lighter after session 3. They had big, smooth hairless patches after 5 sessions which made shaving super quick and without ouchie razor bumps. After 6 sessions there was very little hair left.

Once smooth, do top-ups as you need them. Shave if you need to before these. Try spacing some a month apart, and eventually increase the gap to 2 months and even further.

So far our tester says…

“I’ve now done 6 sessions and 3 top-ups 1 month apart. At first, I’d notice some hairs around tops of my ankles. So, I shaved and flashed them and now they’re no more. I’ll keep going and try dropping the top-ups to every 6 weeks. I’m smooth and shaving rash free in time for Summer. I can’t wait to get my legs out!”

p

TIP: Top-up sessions are vital with all home IPL and laser devices. Studies show the more top-ups you do, the longer-lasting your results. So, over time you need top-ups even less frequently.

The negatives

Just a few not-so-big negatives to report.

First, as mentioned earlier, the Braun Pro 5 is fast and magic on large areas like legs. However, sometimes the flash rate is unpredictable so you can glide it too far, or not far enough in between the flashes. I think this is because of how the sensors scan your skin and select the IPL intensity before each flash. Try to keep close contact to your skin to keep it consistent. It takes a little practise to find your technique and rhythm (especially if you’re used to a slower IPL device).

And next, it’s a bit pricey at full RRP. But offers around £300 and even lower are common. Check prices of the different models because they fluctuate. If it’s over £300, check out the Smoothskin Pure as a cheaper but very worthy alternative.

Smoothskin Pure vs Braun Pro 5 IPL

Smoothskin Pure vs Braun Pro 5 IPL

The Smoothskin Pure and Braun Pro 5 IPL use intense pulsed light energy (IPL) to damage and disable your hair follicles, slowing and then stopping hair regrowth. Periodic top-up treatments keep your skin smooth. Learn more about how home IPL works here.

Quality & long-lasting

Both are top-quality home devices.

Smoothskin Pure and Braun Pro 5 IPL small neat boxes
Professional, neat & attractive small packages with little plastic waste ♻

The Braun Pro 5 IPL uses little plastic and secures the device and bits in an attractive storage pouch inside the outer cardboard packaging. However, Smoothskin’s cardboard box does a slightly better job than the pouch. Reuse it and protective inners to safely store the Pure. Both fit easily in a draw but the Pure box gives sturdier protection.

The build quality is excellent with both, and amongst the best of the home IPLs. The materials are different with each, but equally strong and robust with no creaks or cracks. You get a 2-year warranty with each.

Robust power cordsfixed into the handle of the Smoothskin Pure & Braun Pro 5 IPL
Quality, strong & robust build with fixed power cables for extra durability

And both give plenty of IPL flashes so there’s no need to worry about running out.

The Braun Pro 5 gives a whopping 400,000 flashes which can cover around 1,200,000 cm2 of your body. Based on our standardised calculations this equates to 200+ whole-body sessions (face, underarms bikini line, full legs) or 15+ years of monthly sessions. It’s one of the best.

But the Pure has no limit on the number of IPL flashes you get. It’s the only high-power home IPL to give unlimited flashes from the bulb, so it’s easy to see it’s super value. However, both devices score top marks because they each give many more flashes than you’ll ever need to get and stay smooth. They’re superb value.

So, there’s very little difference between quality and lamp life time with the Pure and Pro 5. Both score top marks.

Styling & design

The classic white and gold styling of the Pro 5 is distinctly Braun. It’s attractive, but I prefer the sleek, glossy black Pure. I love how the controls blend into the design so it’s unfussy, with just a touch of bling from the thin gold trim. It really stands out compared to the Pro 5 and other rivals.

During use, the Pure’s air vents block easily when placed on a soft surface. To stop this and the Pure heating up, place it on its side or top instead. The Braun’s vents don’t have this problem.

The Braun Pro 5 handle is more angled

And both devices have a similar weight and feel balanced. The Pro 5 weighs 285g and the Pure just a little lighter at 270g. The shapes look almost identical too. They’re the same length and width, however the Pure’s shape is a gentler angle. This, and the fact the flash button is a bit lower too, means slightly different grips for each.

Head to head Smoothskin Pure & Braun Pro 5 IPL
Similar shapes & weights, but they feel different in use
photos of the Pure & Braun Pro 5 in 2 different side grips
Both have comfortable side grips & the handle keeps the cord out of your way

However, the angle of the Braun handle gives it a comfortable third grip as shown below. This doesn’t work with the Pure because it creates an awkward and uncomfortable wrist angle. In use, this means the Pure is simpler, quicker and easier to get to grips with (literally) whilst working around your body.

You can also hold the Braun Pro 5 along the handle
Comfy grip for the Pro 5, not so much for the Pure.
Handy & intuitive Soothskin Pure home IPL
The Pure is slightly more intuitive and comfortable to use than the Braun Pro 5

Whilst your styling preference is a personal choice, the shape and design of the Pure is slightly more intuitive and comfortable than the Pro 5. So, the Pure comes out top here.

Flashing your upper lip & other tricky bits

You can get good coverage and easy flashes on your upper lip with both devices.

It’s tricky to flash this area with the medium size attachment on the Braun Pro 5. It’s just a bit too big. So, most models also come with a small precision attachment to make it easier. It’s good for fingers, toes and jawline too.

top down shot of the ediu and small flash windows with the Braun Pro 5 IPL
The Pro 5’s smaller 1.1cm by 1.5cm flash window for upper lip

The Pure has just the one medium-size flash window. And it’s easy to flash your upper lip with it, so you don’t even need a smaller window. It works because of the curved-out shape and the position of the small skin sensor window. It fits perfectly for easy, first-time flashes. And it’s just as easy on other awkward areas too.

Soothskin Pure does not need a smaller flash window!
The shape fits perfectly on the upper lip for easy flashes

Therefore, both devices work well here, but the Pure is simpler and a little less faff.

Safety & power

Both models are clinically proven safe and effective for home use. And both have FDA-clearance too. They also have similar safety features. Here’s a quick overview comparison and there’s more detail below:

The skin sensors keep your eyes safe. Unless covered by skin they won’t flash, so stopping accidental flashes into open space potentially into your eyes. And they protect your skin with a built-in UV filter too.

Blue skin tone sensor lights
The Braun has two blue skin tone sensors and the Pure just one

And both devices have the same clever skin tone sensor technology developed by British company Cyden Ltd. They scan your skin and won’t flash if your tone is too dark. But they’re even more helpful than that. For safe skin tones, they auto-adjust the IPL intensity to your best match. They do this before every flash. So, you needn’t stop and faff to guess which level to use.

red light says your skin is too dark
The power bars show red if your skin is too dark
White lights say yup, your skin is within the safe tone range
The power bars light up white showing which intensity level the clever sensor matches to your tone

They’re both simple, super-safe and straightforward to use.

They also share the same IPL intensity range too, of 3 to 6 J/cm2. They’re amongst the strongest home IPL devices. And this is good news if you have fair skin and can safely use the highest intensities. That’s because these give you your fastest and longest lasting results. This means going longer in between top-ups.

Both the Pure & Pro 5 in standard or power mode
Pure’s Power mode and Braun’s standard mode range from 4 to 6 J/cm2 in 10 small increments

However, you can’t safely use these higher intensities on darker skin tones. That’s because you have more dark melanin pigment in your skin which gets too hot under strong IPL. It can cause pain and even burns and scarring. Instead, the skin tone sensor only flashes the safe to use lower and gentler IPL levels for dark skin.

Pure & Pro 5 with gentle ode selected
Feather = gentle mode for softer IPL flashes down to 3 J/cm2

And there’s also a gentle mode with both devices too, for extra control where you need it. This lowers the intensity a few notches and lessens the sting on sensitive areas like bikini line. The controls on the Pure are slightly easier to use and understand than on the Braun Pro 5, but both do exactly the same thing.

The Braun Pro 5 has another gentle mode, rather imaginatively called extra gentle mode. This lowers the intensity right down so every flash is 3 J/cm2. This is good if the flashes sting even in gentle mode. A further advantage (but not a promoted feature) is the flashes are fast at around one every 0.6 seconds. So, you can use this mode if you’re inpatient or short on time too.

Now, the Pure also has this lowest intensity mode but it’s slightly improved, and they call it speed mode. Learn more about this in the next section.

Fast sessions

The Pure and Pro 5 give the quickest home IPL sessions. They’re fastest on the lower IPL intensities. Here’s a quick comparison overview of the two:

Keep the flash button pressed and you can glide quickly over your legs. Both devices start super fast, but the flashes slow gradually to a manageable speed over the first minute. I find the Pure is just that little bit faster and easier with more consistent flashes. And that’s because of speed mode.

Speed mode on the Smoothskin Pure shows a stopwatch icon and selects the lowest IPL level
Pure’s speed mode gives fast, consistent flashes at 4 J/cm2

On speed mode, it lowers the IPL intensity so each flash is 4J/cm2. That’s a decent amount of hair zapping power for good results, with ultrafast flashes so you don’t spend ages doing it. The flashes start every half second, then after a minute they slow just a bit to a very fast and steady pace. In my tests, a full leg takes an average of 7 minutes. It’s fast!

Extra gentle ode (1 light) selected on the Braun Pro 5 IPL
Pro 5 fastest on extra gentle mode with 3 J/cm2 flashes

The Braun doesn’t have speed mode. Extra gentle mode is closest and, in my tests, averaged 6.5 minutes per full leg. But it has less hair zapping power at 3 J/cm2. So, the disadvantage is you’ll need slightly more frequent top-ups to maintain your smooth than with the Pure.

Also, as mentioned earlier, the skin tone sensor on the Braun is also a little different to the Pure. On the Braun there are two blue sensors on either end of the flash window. On the Pure, there’s one, centred and above the flash window. This affects the flash rate with both. With the Pure it’s steady and consistent because the window must have close contact with your skin. But with the Pro 5, if one or both sensors lose contact slightly, the flashes speed-up. So, it can take a little getting used to.

My tests show that with both devices when using the highest IPL intensity, a full leg takes around 9 minutes and a whole-body just under 30 minutes. But use the Pure with speed mode on legs and power mode on bikini line, underarms and face, and it takes just 19 minutes.

So, both devices are fast, and you’ll be happy with either. Personally, I prefer the Pure because of the option of Speed mode, and the consistent flash speed.

What do they feel like?

With both models you’ll hear the cooling fan whir and a small pop with each flash. The flashes are bright but harmless to your eyes. You can wear sunglasses to ease any irritation.

Flashes feel hot with both the Pure and Pro 5 when used on the highest intensities. They can sting on more sensitive areas like the bikini line but generally are very bearable. If it’s too uncomfortable just use gentle or speed mode instead.

Blue skin tone sensor lights
The Pure’s single skin sensor means consistent speed flashes

Sessions are quick and easy with both so you’ll finish before you get bored or tired. However, the Braun requires just a little more concentration than the Pure. That’s because the speed of the flashes varies, so it’s a little harder to get accurate coverage. It happens because the proximity of the two skin sensors either side of the flash alters the intensity. So, if both aren’t flush against your skin it flashes faster and at a lower intensity. Therefore, it’s trickier to glide the right amount between flashes.

The Pure is easier because it has a single sensor window above the large flash window. This must be flush against your skin to scan it, so the flash intensity is consistent.

Treatment schedule vs results

Both the Pure and Braun Pro 5 need up to 12 weekly sessions during start-up. You’ll typically see significant results after 6+ sessions.

close up of the Pro 5 & Smoothskin Pure flash windows
Up to 12 weekly sessions with both for smooth skin

Smoothskin recommend you complete all 12 sessions so you catch all hairs during an active growth cycle. It also means you can go longer in between top-up sessions from the start. Braun suggest you switch to top-ups once your skin is smooth. Both brands recommend top-ups at every 1 to 2 months.

During your start-up phase you’ll notice hairs grow slower, softer, finer and lighter after a few sessions. Shaving is easier without vicious stubble, rash or ingrown hairs. Eventually bald patches appear and get bigger. You may see these results very quickly, or slower and more gradually over 12 weeks.

Either complete all 12 sessions or, if you’re smooth before this, switch to top-ups. Do them as soon as you see any regrowth or at least every month if you’re still smooth. The more you do the longer you can eventually go between top-ups.

Smoothskin Pure vs Braun Pro 5 IPL comparison summary

Very similar in design & perforance but the Pure wins!
We love both, but the Pure wins!

Both the Pure and Braun Pro 5 are superb choices and two of my recommended best buys. There’s not much difference between them, and you’ll be made-up with either. But for me, the Pure wins because it’s slightly faster, more precise and comfortable to use, and a tad more affordable too.

Here’s a quick summary table of the spec, test and performance data above and then a round-up of the pros and cons to help you decide:

Braun Silk Expert Pro 3 vs 5 IPLs

Braun Silk Expert Pro 3 vs 5 IPLs

The Braun Pro IPL models use intense pulsed light energy (IPL) to damage and disable your hair follicles, slowing and then stopping hair regrowth. Periodic top-up treatments keep your skin smooth. Learn more about how home IPL works here.

Keep reading for photos and an in-depth comparison of lamp lifetime, design, operation and features, speed, safety and power, effort and results. Or skip to the summary at the end.

Quality & long-lasting

These models are exactly the professional, long-lasting and top-notch quality you expect from Braun. And I think amongst the best home IPL devices you can buy.

Neat packaging but less plastic with the Braun Pro 5 IPL

The packaging is attractive and neat, and clearly shows all the key information. I love the Pro 5 uses very little plastic packaging. Instead, it secures everything inside the tidy storage pouch. It’s a thoughtful, simple and eco-friendly touch.

The Braun Pro 5 (right) storage pouch is better than the simple storage bag with the Pro 3.

Both models feel and look expensive. They have the same excellent build quality, strong and durable materials with robust construction. So, rest assured they’re built to last. They come with a 2-year warranty.

And there’s no need to worry about running out of flashes either.

Based on my standardised calculations they both give enough for 200+ full body sessions. After the start-up phases this equates to 15+ years of whole-body sessions (face, underarms bikini line, full legs). Although the Braun Pro 5 gives more, they both still score 5 stars because you get many more flashes than you’ll need to maintain your smooth.

You also get a UK 100-day money back guarantee with both models. So, if you decide it’s not for you, return it within the guarantee period for a refund. It’s extra reassurance if you change your mind.

Shape & design

The shape and design of both models is near identical with just a few minor differences. The first of which is styling. The Braun Pro 3 IPL is white with lilac trim, whereas the Pro 5 gets the grown-up, more expensive looking white with gold trim.

Left; Pro 3 white & lilac, right; Pro 5 gets the bling in white & gold

Both share the same-size, curvy, ergonomic wand-shape. They’re compact and lightweight but not flimsy. The second difference is the Braun Pro 3 IPL is slightly lighter than the Pro 5, presumably because it has less tech inside. The Pro 3 weighs 260g versus 285g for the Pro 5.

Identical compact curvy ergonomic shape.
The same simple controls with a large flash button & gentle mode button
Cooling vents on the underside of each

They work on mains-power, each with long and flexible power cords. The angled handles keep the cords out of the way as you work. They’re fixed into the handle too, so the weight of the power-pack won’t pull them out mid-zapping. A smaller cable connects to the powerpack and plugs into the mains. So, there’s plenty slack if you work next to an outlet.

Thick, supple no-tangle cord to the power-pack gives and ample 2-metres of slack.
Fixed, secure & durable cords won’t fall out

Both fit perfectly in hand, are very comfortable to hold, well-balanced and handy to manoeuvre around your body. So, there’s not much to choose between these models here.

Flash windows

Both models have a medium-sized, multi-purpose flash window measuring 1cm by 3cm (3 cm2). They give precise, easy flashes on most body areas. However, it’s a bit tricky to position on the smaller upper-lip and around the jawline. So, most models also have a smaller precision window measuring 1.1 cm x 1.65 cm (1.8 cm2). This is easier to position on smaller, bony or awkward areas.

And if that wasn’t enough (which i think it was), the latest Pro 5 IPL models has even more heads. You get an additional precision head (they’re both the same so I’m not sure why) and a new wide head. This is slightly larger than the standard, medium-sized head. So, it means you can cover large areas like your torso or tops of legs even faster. However, I think the Pro 5 and Pro 3 do an excellent job without these additions.

Maybe Braun felt left out and wanted as many heads as the Philips Lumea Prestige. Who knows.

Medium-size flash window best for legs, arms, bikini line, underarms.
Right; small, tapered precision flash window best for upper-lip, jawline, fingers, toes & other tricky bits.

Safety & power

Rather unsurprisingly, both models are also proven clinically safe and effective. They also have the same safety features. Here’s a quick comparison of the power & safety creds for the Braun Silk Expert Pro 3 vs 5 IPLs:

The skin sensors keep your eyes safe. Unless covered by skin they won’t flash, so stopping accidental flashes into open space potentially into your eyes. And they protect your skin with a built-in UV filter.

The blue skin sensor lights must have skin contact before they’ll flash
Sensor lights check your skin tone before every flash. Red light means nope!

And both models have a skin tone sensor. They check your skin and won’t flash if your tone is too dark. But they’re even more helpful than that. For safe skin tones, they also auto-adjust the IPL intensity to your best match. They do this before every flash. So, you needn’t stop and faff to guess which level to use. They’re simple, super-safe and straightforward to use.

And now for the first of the two key differences between the models…

Although both models are safe for light to dark skin (types I to V) they each have a different IPL intensity range.

  • The Braun Pro 5 has higher-power IPL over a broader range with 10 intensities ranging from 3 to 6 J/cm2
  • The Braun Pro 3 has low to medium power IPL over a small range with 3 intensities ranging from 3 to 4 J/cm2

OK, but what does this mean?

Lighter skin tones can safely use higher IPL intensities. And it’s widely agreed higher IPL intensities give longer-lasting smooth results. This means going longer between top-ups. Therefore, the Braun Pro 5 is a particularly compelling choice if you have light skin tones and may be worth the extra cash to you.

High IPL power from the Braun Pro 5 matches light skin tones

However, you can’t safely use these higher intensities on darker skin tones. That’s because you have more dark pigment in your skin which gets hot under strong IPL. It can cause pain and even burns and scarring. So, darker skin won’t benefit from this high-power IPL in the Braun Pro 5. Instead, the skin tone sensor only selects the safe to use lower and gentler IPL intensity levels for dark skin.

The Braun Pro 3 is a much better match for darker skin tones. That’s because its three gentler IPL intensities are the safest maximums for medium and dark tones (up to type V). So, you needn’t pay more for a high-power IPL device when you can’t use the high intensities anyway.

  • Light tones (types I to IV) can use levels 1 to 3 (maximum 4 J/cm2)
  • Darker tones (type V) can use the gentler levels 1 and 2 (lowest 3 J/cm2)
Braun Pro 3’s gentler IPL are the safe maximums for medium to dark skin

So, does this mean the Braun Pro 3 is a bad choice if you’ve light skin tones?

No. you’ll be able to use level 3 and it’ll still give you smooth skin. But once you are smooth, you may need slightly more frequent top-ups than compared to the Pro 5. But by how much more it’s not possible to say. You can read this article to understand the compound effect of home IPL sessions.

Gentle modes give extra control

If you’re concerned the IPL flashes may sting, both models give you added control with gentle modes.

Press the feather button to shift the IPL intensity down for more comfortable flashes.

The Pro 5 has an ‘extra gentle’ mode too. This selects the lowest IPL intensity at 3 J/cm2. It’s extra control, especially if you have darker skin. The Braun Pro 3 doesn’t have this extra gentle mode. However, it doesn’t need it because it operates at lower intensities over a much smaller range. The gentle mode does the job here.

Which gives the fastest sessions?

And now for the second key difference between models. The Braun Pro 5 gives faster sessions. Here’s a comparison of the speed of sessions for the Braun Silk Expert Pro 3 vs 5 IPLs:

Speed of sessions comparison

Flashes slow slightly

Flash rate varies depending on skin contact

11 mins per full leg (high)

30 mins for whole-body

9 mins per full leg (high)

27 mins for whole-body

First, let’s look at what Braun say, then how each model performs in my speed tests.

Pssst. The Braun Pro 3 IPL is fast too!

The Braun Pro 5 gets top billing here. Braun say it’s ‘safe, fast & effective”. But, of the poor old Braun Pro 3, they say it’s only “safe & effective”. Come on Braun Pro 3, keep up!

So, I was rather surprised when both the Braun Pro 5 and the Braun Pro 3 ranked amongst my top devices for speedy sessions. Here’s what I found:

6.5 to 9 mins to zap a full leg with the Braun Pro 5 IPL

The Braun Pro 5 IPL is one of the fastest home IPL devices (beaten by only one). You get up to 125 flashes per minute on the lowest intensity level (or extra gentle mode). And that’s very fast with a flash roughly every half second! However, as it heats up the flashes slow a bit, but they still come in under a second. This means a smoother, no-pause glide motion across your skin. Braun say you can flash a full leg in 5 minutes on the lowest intensity. My tests average 6.5 minutes per full leg.

On the highest intensity level, gliding is less smooth because the flashes come every second or so. I also find the flash rate varies, so it takes a bit of focus. My tests found a full leg takes around 9 minutes and that’s still one of the fastest high-power home IPLs out there.

How to hold the Braun Pro 3 IPL for legs
9 to 11 mins to flash a full leg with the Braun Pro 3 IPL

The Braun Pro 3 IPL is a close runner-up. You get up to 60 flashes per minute on the lowest intensity level which is roughly a flash every second. The speed is consistent because it doesn’t get as hot. Gliding isn’t totally smooth, but it’s still quick. Braun say you can flash a full leg in 9 minutes on the lowest intensity and my tests match that. Flashes are slightly slower on full power and it takes just under 11 minutes per full leg.

So, both models give very fast sessions. The Braun Pro 5 is the fastest, but the Pro 3 isn’t tardy either. With both models you can zap your whole body (full legs, bikini line, underarms and face) in 30 minutes or less. So, you’re done before you can get bored or tired.

What do they feel like?

With both models you’ll hear the cooling fan whir and a small pop with each flash. And the flashes are bright. They’re harmless to your eyes but you can wear sunglasses to ease any irritation.

The gentler Braun Pro 3 just feels warm and doesn’t sting at all.

The flashes on the highest intensity feel hotter with the Pro 5. That’s because the intensity is 6 J/cm2 vs 4 J/cm2 with the Braun Pro 3. Therefore, the Pro 5 can sting more, especially on sensitive areas. It’s a bit uncomfortable, but bearable and you can use gentle mode to ease it. In comparison, I find the Pro 3 flashes warm without any stinging at all.

Treatment schedule vs results

The treatment regimen for both Braun models is identical.

Use them both for between 4 to 12 weekly sessions until you have smooth, hairless skin (typically 6+ sessions).

Because the Pro 5 IPL has slightly quicker session times, you’ll spend less time overall than with the Pro 3 IPL. With the Pro 5 too, if you have fair skin and can use the higher IPL levels, you’ll also need top-up sessions less frequently. That’s because the Pro 5 has more hair zapping power on the highest levels than those with the Pro 3.

During your start-up phase you’ll notice hairs grow slower after a few sessions. Hair also feels softer, finer and lighter. Shaving is easier without vicious stubble, rash or ingrown hairs. Eventually bald patches appear and get bigger. You may see these results very quickly, or slower and more gradually over 12 weeks.

Once you’re smooth switch to top-ups. Braun recommend every month or two with both devices. However, if you use the lowest intensity levels with either model you may need more regular top-ups to stay smooth. For example, one every 3 or 4 weeks. Overtime and after several top-ups most people find they can go longer in between them.

Both Braun models are top choices, perfect for small and large areas, face and full body sessions.

Both these Braun models are excellent choices because they’re very easy to use. The Braun Pro 5 IPL gives quicker sessions, and if you have fair skin and can use the higher intensity levels, it’ll give slightly longer lasting results too. But the Braun Pro 3 is more affordable and still one of the quickest home IPLs you can buy. The low to medium IPL range suits darker skin tones, but it still works on fair skin with a few more sessions.

Braun Silk Expert 5 vs Braun Pro 5 IPL

Braun Silk Expert 5 vs Braun Pro 5 IPL

The Braun devices use intense pulsed light energy (IPL) to damage and disable your hair follicles, slowing and then stopping hair regrowth. Periodic top-up treatments keep your skin smooth. Learn more about how home IPL works here.

Photo collage of the precision attachment, IPL and fixed power cord and storage pouch.
Braun corrected the criticism made to the earlier model (except the missing cleaning cloth!)

Here’s a quick roundup of the key differences between the Braun Silk Expert 5 vs Pro 5 IPL devices.

Size & weight

Both models have the same ergonomic shape and large flash button. But the Braun Pro 5 IPL is 15% smaller and 25% lighter than the previous model. This makes a big difference. It fits better in the hand, and so is more comfortable to hold and easier to manoeuvre.

The Braun Pro 5 IPL is smaller and weighs 285g vs the Braun 5 at 340g
The Braun Pro 5 IPL (left) fits more comfortably in your hand and is easier to manoeuvre and position around your body
The size of the flash windows (body attachment) is the same for both models at 1 cm x 3 cm

Styling & cord

The Braun Pro 5 has updated styling. The colours change from white and bronze with silver accents to a soft white and matt-gold with gold accents.

The gold and white Braun Pro 5 IPl (left) and the white, bronze and silver Braun 5 IPL.

Both models are mains-powered with a 2 metre long power-cord giving plenty of room to move around. However, the Braun Pro 5 power cord is fixed into the base of the handle. This stops the weight of the power pack pulling it out during your treatments.

The Braun Pro 5 IPL power cord is fixed into the handle base (left). The Braun 5 IPL is detachable and can come out during use.

The cord itself is better quality too on the Braun Pro 5 IPL. It’s thicker and more supple. There’s nothing wrong with the cord on the Braun 5 IPL (I don’t find it tangles). But on the Braun Pro 5 it’s just better!

Lamp lifetime

The older Braun 5 model comes with 300,000 flashes. This gives enough flashes for over 15 years of monthly whole-body sessions. The later Braun Pro 5 models come with more, at 400,000 flashes. So, you’ll get even more sessions from the IPL bulb.

However, the compound effect of at-home IPL means that after several top-up sessions you can go even longer between sessions. So, most people can eventually go several months without needing a top-up. Therefore, both the older and latest Braun models give way more flashes than you’re ever likely to use.

More flash windows

Most of the Braun Pro 5 IPL models also have a smaller face/precision flash window. You simply pull out and push on the different flash windows.

The smaller precision attachment with the Braun Pro 5 IPL.

This is a very helpful addition to get good contact for easy flashes on the jawline and upper lip. (It’s also easier on fingers and toes too). The older model requires a bit of faffing and face-pulling to get a flash and cover all your skin. But, it’s still possible and gives the same results.

And the very latest Braun Pro 5 models also have a wide flash window. This is slightly larger than the standard flash window and so is faster to cover upper legs and torso in flashes. See how all the Braun Pro 5 models compare here.

The Braun Pro 5 is faster

Sessions with the Braun Pro 5 IPL are faster than with the older Braun 5.

  • The Braun Pro 5 flashes come every 0.6 to 1.2 seconds
  • The Braun 5 IPL flashes every 0.9 to 1.9 seconds

They’re fastest on the lowest intensities.

Both give fast treatments. I can do a full-body session in under 30 minutes with the Braun Pro 5 and around 45 minutes with the Braun 5. So, you’re done before you get bored or tired. But the Braun Pro 5 is super-quick. It’s one the fastest available. Therefore, it’s easier to fit in around a busy day and commit to the regimen.

Price

Both models promise the same hair reduction results. So the price of each is worth checking before you decide.

The Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of the Braun Pro 5 is £524.99 to £599.99. Today it’s on offer at around £250. That’s super value.

The RRP of the Braun 5 is £399.99 to £499.99. And you can get it on offer around £230. That too is a fine deal for a good device. Prices may drop further to sell leftover stock now that the Braun Pro 5 has arrived. You could pick up a bargain.

Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 models comparison

Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 models comparison

The Braun Pro 5 IPL is one of the fastest to flash a full leg - just average of 9 mins in my tests!
In my tests, a full leg took under 9 mins and a whole body session just under 30 minutes. Woah.

The Braun Pro 5 IPL is a top quality at-home device, one of the most powerful and comes out top in most of my tests. It’s one of the best. Here’s a quick summary of my full Pro 5 IPL review, then we’ll move on the Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 models comparison:

But what’s the difference between the models PL5347, PL5257, PL5223, PL5149, PL5137, PL5124, PL5014 yadda yadda?

Let’s begin…

Differences between the Braun Pro 5 models

All the Pro 5 IPL models have exactly the same shape and weight, IPL power range, gentle modes, lamp lifetime, speed of sessions, treatment schedules and clever tech which matches every IPL flash to your skin tone. The differences between them are the price, flash windows, storage pouches and type of Venus shaving razor you get with each. There’s also one model which comes with a Braun Face Mini hair remover.

The improved mode select on the newer Braun Pro 5 IPL models
Standard (3 lights) is the default mode.

The latest models have improved controls on top for choosing standard, gentle or extra gentle mode. They have a clear ‘+/-‘ button to cycle through the modes along a scale from ‘feather’ icon on the left to ‘bright sun’ on the right. The three modes are indicated by three white lights; extra gentle (1), gentle (2) to standard (3).

The older (left) versus latest (right) controls on the Braun Pro 5 IPL devices. the newer version has clearer, more intuitive buttons and markings to choose from the 3 modes ranging from extra gentle, gentle to standard power modes.
SkinPro 2.0 on the newer modesl is still the same 3 modes and power range, but with updated and more intuitive controls.

Braun have given it a new, fresher name – SkinPro 2.0. But it’s still the same SensoAdapt™ tech as in the older models, which selects the best match IPL intensity for your skin tone, before every flash. Gentle mode lowers the range selected a couple of notches, and extra gentle lowers it to the lowest IPL intensity (level 1).

The older previous models are the PL5014, PL5124, PL5137, PL5223 and PL5117.

The new models are the PL5347, PL5387, PL5257, PL5223, PL5149, PL5140. And just for a dash of confusion Braun also have updated PL5124 and PL5137 models on their website. So, double check you get the right one if you want the latest design (look for the updated controls and new style storage pouches. More on these below).

p

TIP: The older, previous Pro 5 IPL models are available considerably cheaper than the new ones, for under £300 (versus £400+). So, if you aren’t bothered you could score yourself bargain.

And now a bit more detail about the differences.

Different flash windows

There are 3 different flash windows with the Pro 5 IPL models. They are different sizes and shapes to better flash different body areas.

First, there’s the gold-coloured medium-sized standard flash window. This is 1 by 3 cm so a total of 3 cm2. This flash window is a super allrounder size and shape for zapping legs, arms, underarms, torso, bikini line, neck and jawline. It takes a little practise to get a flash on your upper lip area.

Next, there’s the small, white precision window. This is 1.1 by 1.65 cm so a total size of 1.65 cm2. This flash window is a helpful addition and makes it easier to flash your upper lip, fingers, toes and gives extra precision around the delicate bkini area. Some models come with two of these attachments. One has a ‘+’ marked on it so you can tell them apart, and keep one for face and one for bikini line.

Finally, there’s also a white, wide flash window. This measures around 4 cm2 and covers a bigger surface area with each flash so it’s good on torso and upper legs.

All the Braun Pro 5 IPL models come with the standard flash window. Most (exluding the PL5014) come with one precision window too.

Some models come with the wide flash window, and some with the wide flash window plus one extra small precision window.

Here’s a quick list to confirm which model has which windows:

Do you need all the flash windows?

Nope.

You get everything you need with the standard window for all body areas and the small window for face and uneven areas, or where precision is important (e.g. bikini area).

The medium-size 3cm2 (1 by 3 cm) and small 1.65cm2 (1.1 by 1.65 cm) flash windows with the Braun Pro 5 IPLare the important ones, and all you really need to zap your full body.
Everything you need for a fast and thorough Braun Pro 5 IPL zapping session…

The latest and more expensive Pro 5 IPL models come with also either the wide, or the wide and an extra precision flash window. But you don’t need these to get the job done. So. if you wish to save some pennies, check prices before you choose which model to buy.

Storage pouches, razors & extras

The latest Pro 5 IPL models also have varied colour vegan leather storage pouches which come in different colours (grey, black and red). There’s even a fancy vanity case with one model. And they come with either the Venus Extra Smooth or Venus Extra Smooth Swirl razor.

The older models PL5124 and PL5117 come with a different design and suedette grey storage bag. The older type PL5137 has a white and gold woven fabric storage bag.

The old versus updated storage bags with the Braun Pro 5 IPL at-home devices
Old versus new storage bags. The new soft grey pouch also comes in red and black.

All the storage bags do a good job of protecting the Pro 5 IPL device and keeping the flash windows and power cable together. For extra protection from knocks, keep it in a draw. And both razors are rather splendid at getting a close shave.

One model (PL5149) also comes with a Braun Face Mini hair remover, which is a nice touch to avoid shaving your face before your sessions. Or you could try an inexpensive dermaplaning tool.

All the Pro 5 IPL models come with the UK 100-day money-back guarantee from Braun. And they’re all brilliant, easy and effective at-home devices for the face, small bits, legs and large areas. You’ll pay more for the newer models with all the extra flash windows. But if you want a bargain, pick up the earlier Pro 5 IPL models (PL5124, PL5137, PL5117) which are still available. They’re just as powerful, fast, easy, and the results are just as good.

Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5

Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5

The Philips Lumea Prestige and Braun Pro 5 IPL use intense pulsed light energy (IPL) to damage and disable your hair follicles, slowing and then stopping hair regrowth. Periodic top-up treatments keep your skin smooth. Learn more about how home IPL works here.

Quality & lamp lifetime

Photo of the Lumea Prestige and Braun Pro 5 boxes side by side with lifted lids.
Compact, neat and attractive packaging for both, but the Braun IPL has less plastic.

Both devices have neat, attactive packaging with clear, concise information and comprehensive user manuals. Philips are just a tad more comprehensive around tanning and shaving vs waxing.

And both have a storage pouch. I prefer the Braun’s because it stores everything, including the powerpack and cable. This means less protective plastic in the packaging ♻. You also get a Venus razor with the Braun Pro 5. That’s a nice extra to ensure you get a super-smooth shave.

p

TIP: Don’t throw away the boxes! Store the devices in them and in a draw to protect them from any knocks and bumps

The materials and build-quality of both are excellent – the best you can buy. They feel solid, robust and expensive. Even the 2 metre-long power cables with each are excellent quality. They’re thick and supple and won’t tangle or twist. And the handle shape of each device keeps the cord out of the way. So, you don’t get tied up in knots.

Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 both have strong and supple cords, but the Prestige's is detachable.
Thick, supple, quality mains cables stay out of the way and don’t tangle.

The power cable on the Braun Pro 5 is fixed into the device so the weight of the power pack won’t pull it out as you work (the previous models problem).

The Prestige has a different cable design, so the power pack isn’t an issue. It’s a snug, secure fit which easily detaches too. And that’s because you can also use the Prestige cordless. More on that later.

And there’s no need to worry about the flashes running out either. The lamp lifetime is superb for both devices. Here’s how they compare:

Philips Lumea Prestige (older models)

My score: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The latest 9000 series Prestige models have the most amount of flashes and can treat the most surface area of your body. But all these devices and models score 5 out of 5 stars from me. The reason being ALL give you many more flashes than you’ll ever need.

Each gives plenty flashes for over 15+ years of monthly full-body top-up sessions. And it’s very unlikely you’ll need these continuous monthly top-ups. That’s because once you’ve done around a year of maintenance top-ups, your skin stays smooth for several months at a time, and even up to one year. So, you’ll probably only need a couple of top-ups per year! Therefore, you’ll never use up all those flashes!

Both devices come with a 2 year warranty and UK 100-day money back guarantees. Read the Braun T&Cs here: Braun UK & Ireland Pro 5 IPL money back guarantee, and buy the Prestige from CurrentBody UK for a 100 days guarantee.

Shape & design

The shapes are very different, and therefore, so is how you manoeuvre and grip each device.

The Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 are very difference in shape, size and profile.
The shape, size and ergonomics of the devices are both quality but very different

The Prestige’s gun-shape is intuitive. It feels relaxed with a secure grip on the long, tapered handle, which also gives excellent leverage. The trigger is easy to find because there’s a braille-like flower on it. Press it comfortably with your index or middle finger, or thumb if you rotate your grip. The controls and the flash window are easy to see.

But it’s much heavier than other devices at 560g. That’s because of the rechargeable lithium battery inside. However, the gun-shape is perfectly balanced and secure to grip. I find there’s no strain as you rotate and pivot your wrist. It’s comfortable and easy to work around your body.

Photos showing the various comfortable grips of both the Braun Pro 5 and Prestige IPL devices
Each device feels very different. But both are intuitive, ergonomic, comfortable, and easy to position.

In contrast, the Braun Pro 5 IPL is compact and light-weight. But not flimsy. The sleek wand-shape is well-balanced and fits perfectly in your hand. At just 285g there’s no risk of strain or tiredness. It’s easy to manoeuvre around your body. The flash button is large and easy to press. There are varied grips suited to different body areas. But it’s very comfortable to handle.

The controls on the Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 are both clear and simple, bubt the Prestige has more buttons because it's manually controlled.
The easy to operate and see at a glance controls on top of both devices.

Both are superb – the best available. But for me, the gun-shape of the Prestige is slightly more comfortable and easier to use.

Corded vs cordless

The Braun Pro 5 works on mains-power only. This means you get non-stop operation and can finish your zapping in one session without need to recharge any battery. Get yourself set up comfortably with privacy, a mirror and an extension cable. Off you go.

The Prestige works on mains-power. But it gives you extra flexibility using it cordless too.

Side profile shots of the Braun Pro 5 and Prestige in hand side by side showing the Prestige without the mains power cord.
The Prestige also works cordless for small, awkward or private areas. You get around 30 mins of battery.

Just remove the cord for smaller and/or hard to reach places. So, you can nip into the bathroom, lock the door and zap that ladytache. Or flash your bits. Literally.

However, you get only 30 mins of power from each battery charge. Therefore, it’s best suited for small areas only.

Power & safety

Both devices have a similar IPL intensity range and both have impressive safety features. Here’s a quick Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 comparison of the two:

The Lumea Prestige with a power range of 2.5 to 6.5 J/cm² and the Pro 5 IPL with a range of 3 to 6 J/cm², are the highest-powered at-home IPL devices available. So, they’re super choices if you have light skin and can use the highest levels. That’s because the higher levels give the fastest, longest-lasting results after the start-up regimen. you’ll still need top-ups, but less frequently than with lower powered devices.

1 to 10 white intensity indicator lights on the Braun Pro 5 IPL.
The Braun Pro 5’s 1 to 10 white intensity level indicator lights. They illuminate to show which level the sensor has selected.

The Prestige has 5 intensity levels in that range. But the Braun Pro 5 has 10. This means the Pro 5 has more increments for a more precise match to dvaried skin tones I to V on the Fitzpatrick rage. And selecting the right one is easy too, because of the advanced skin tone sensor.

Both have advanced skin tone sensors

To recap, both the Braun Pro and Prestige are safe for light to dark skin, but not the darkest. And their skin tone sensors protect darker skin.

Like other skin tone sensors, they check your skin tone and won’t flash if it’s too dark. But they also do more to keep you safe, albeit in slightly different ways.

Close up photo of the sensors next to the flash windows, and how each device illuminates red to show the skin tone is too dark for safe treatment
The 2 small skin tone senors on the Braun IPL (left) and the single sensor on the Prestige (right) won’t flash and illuminate red if your skin is too dark.

The Prestige recommends the best of the 5 intensity levels for your skin. Place on your skin and press the 🔎 button. The skin tone sensor checks and highlights your best skin tone intensity. This takes the stress out of choosingyour intensity. And on more sensitive areas you can still manually lower it a notch too.

On the Prestige: The magnify glass button activates the sensor, and you can manually control the intensity with the up / down arrows.

The Braun Pro 5 auto-selects the best of the 10 intensity levels, before every flash. It’s the perfect balance of power and safety in every flash, straightforward and simple. And a neat feature if you have different tones across body areas. All you need do is position and zap.

If it feels too intense you can select one of the gentle modes. Gentle mode shifts it down a few intensity levels, and extra gentle drops it to the lowest level (1).

Close up photos of the white intensity indicators and gentle mode button and lights on the Braun Pro 5.
On the Braun Pro 5: The sensor scans and selects the best of the 10 intensities before every flash, and the gentle modes reduce the intensity.

I think the Braun Pro 5 is best if you have varied skin tones across your body areas. Because there’s no need to faff about with checks and levels. It does it all for you.

Flash windows

There are various models of the Prestige and Pro 5 IPL, and they come with different flash windows. The Prestige has total 5 different windows and the Pro 5 IPL has 3 different windows. Prestige large vs Pro 5 IPL standard flash windows: Both excellent for zapping large areas.

All these flash windows are varied shapes and sizes to better fit different body areas. But the Prestige’s flash windows are even better for 3 reasons:

#1 Two of the flash windows have added clear or red filters in the flash window to adapt the light energy so it’s more comfortable on face and coarse, stubborn hair in bikini areas.

#2 Most of the windows (excluding the facial window) are also curved to better fit your body contours. This makes it easier to get a flash, and works particularly well with the large body attachment for fast and easy leg zappings.

#3 And lastly, all the windows have unique chips which, when inserted into the device, adapt the IPL light energy to match different body areas and hair types.

There’s no comparison data showing how much more comfy or better results are with these features. But they do sound rather special (which I guess is the point). However, the contour hugging curves do make it easier to flash and get thorough skin coverage.

All the Prestige models come with the large curved body and small flat face window. Some models also have either the medium size precision window for both bikini and underarms, or the separate bikini and separate underarms flash windows. Check out this Lumea Prestige models comparison to see which model has which.

All the Pro 5 IPL models (excluding the PL5014) come with the medium-size standard and the small precision/face flash window. Some also have the wide flash window, and the rest have the wide and an additional precision flash window which you can use on your bikini line. Check out this Braun Pro 5 IPL models comparison review to see which model has which.

Do you need all these flash windows?

Probably not.

Both devices’ flash windows work well. But really, you get everything you need with both the Pro 5 and Prestige models that have a larger window for body areas and a small window for face and uneven areas, or where precision is important (e.g. bikini area).

The medium-size 3cm2 (1 by 3 cm) and small 1.65cm2 (1.1 by 1.65 cm) flash windows with the Braun Pro 5 IPLare the important ones, and all you really need to zap your full body.
The most important flash windows with the Braun Pro 5 IPL models
The large curved 4.1 cm2 (1.5 by 3 .5 cm) and small 2 cm2 (0.8 by 2.5 cm) flash windows with the Philiops Lumea Prestige are the important flash windows, and all you really need to zap your full body. The curved leg window makes flashes easy and consistent.
The most impoartant flash windows with the Lumea Prestige. The bikini/precision window is handy, but not essential.

The Pro 5 IPL wide flash window gives slightly faster coverage on upper legs and torso. However, it’s still fast to cover these areas with the 3 cm2 standard flash window. The standard flash window is also easier to position and flash on lower legs, so I prefer to keep zapping it on my upper legs too, rather than stop and swap to the wide window. It’s easy on bikini line, arms and underarms too.

You can also opt for a Pro 5 model with two precision flash windows, if you fancy. You can use one on your face and the other on your bikini line. But unless you have a skin condition you want to contain, there’s really no need for two identical flash windows.

With the Prestige, I like the idea of the added filters and configured flashes for hair types, but in practice I don’t feel any difference in sensation when using them by body area. But I do love those body-hugging curves, especially on legs. They make close skin contact so it’s easier to glide and flash. It even helps on knobbly knees!

I love the large, curved-in body attachment on the Prestige. Easy flashes on legs, arms, torso and underarms.

It’s possible to zap your underams and bikini line with a combo of the large body and the smaller face window too. However, the medium-sized curved-out precision or bikini attachement (both the same shape and with the added clear filter) does come in handy, especially on the bikini line. But it’s not essential.

In summary, with both devices you don’t need the extra flash windows, especially if there’s a big difference in price. A larger body and smaller face flash window do the job very well indeed.

Which gives the fastest treatments?

Both are fast and super choices for treating large areas or your full body, but the Braun Pro 5 IPL is fastest. Here’s a quick comparison:

Speed of sessions comparison

Prestige

Pro 5 IPL

Face, small bits, legs & large areas

Face, small bits, legs & large areas

Flashes every 2 seconds

Flashes every 0.6 to 1.2 seconds

Steady & consistent flash intervals

Flashes slow slightly at first

Then flash rate varies depending on skin contact

10 mins per full leg (high)

40 mins for whole-body

9 mins per full leg (high)

27 mins for whole-body

For both devices, keep the flash button pressed for continuous flashes as you glide the flash window along your skin.

With the Braun Pro 5 IPL on the highest intensity levels, I can do a thorough full leg in around 9 mins, and my full body in 27 mins. It has slightly faster flashes and a smoother gliding motion over your skin. than the Prestige.

However, the speed of the flashes can vary a bit. This is determined by skin colour, (it’s faster on the lower IPL levels) and also how close the sensors are to your skin. If it’s not totally flush, the flashes come a little quicker. So, you need to keep good contact to keep the flashes consistent. Otherwise, you can glide too far or not far enough in between flashes. It takes a tiny bit of practise.

With the Lumea Prestige, on the highest intensity level, I can do a thorough full leg in around 10 mins, and my full body in under 40 mins. I find on legs it’s a smooth, quick glide motion where you need to pause slightly for each flash. It makes for a controlled, consustent glide-and-zap rhythm.

There’s not much in it. You can easily finish a full body session before getting tired or bored.

Photo of the Braun Pro 5 and Prestige showing the difference in size
The Prestige flash repetition rate suits the size and ergonomics of the device. The Braun is small and lightweight and can be manoeuvred at speed to match the flashes.

The shape and design of both devices matches their speed and maneouvrability. The Braun Pro 5 is small, light-weight and handy so you can keep-up with the fast flashes. The Prestige combines precision with slightly slower flashes matching the weight and bigger gun-shape design. You need concentration with both to ensure full coverage with no gaps and missed hairy bits!

The Prestige and Braun Pro 5 IPL are amongst the fastest home IPL devices you can choose. But if speed is most important to you, the Braun Pro 5 is the clear winner.

Treatment schedules & results

Use the Prestige for 4 or 5 sessions, 1 every 2 weeks (taking up to 8 weeks) to get smooth skin. A whole-body session takes around 40 minutes.

Use the Braun Pro 5 between 4 to 12 weekly sessions until you have smooth, hairless skin (typically 6 sessions). A whole-body session takes around 30 minutes.

During your start-up phase, you’ll notice hairs grow slower, softer, finer and lighter after a few sessions. Shaving is easier without vicious stubble, rash or ingrown hairs. Eventually bald patches appear and get bigger. You may see these results very quickly, or slower and more gradually over the course. And speed of results can differ by body area too.

Then, switch to top-up sessions. With both the Prestige and the Pro 5 IPL you’ll need these every month or two. It’s very important to stick with them. If you do, and after you’ve done several, you’ll find you can go many months between top-ups.

Related: learn why top-ups are crucial & more about long term results

The Gillette Venus / Braun Silk Expert 3 is an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device that’s safe for home use. The IPL energy disables the hair follicle and breaks the cycle of hair growth. After each treatment your hair grows back slower and finer, until eventually it doesn’t grow back at all. Periodic use disables new follicle growth and keeps you continuously smooth.

First available in early 2017, the Gillette Venus Silk expert 3 IPL is FDA cleared and available for sale in the US and Canada. In the UK, Europe and Australia it’s called the Braun Silk expert 3 IPL and it meets EU standards with CE certification. Procter & Gamble market both, in partnership with Cyden Ltd who manufacture the device. There’s an updated model called the Braun Pro 3 IPL.

The Silk Expert 3 is the little sister of the Silk Expert 5. It keeps several of her excellent features but with a reduced spec. It’s positioned as a standard, mid-range device. But there’s more you need to learn about the speed of application and the power output of the device.

Is it good value?

It’s great value. You get more flashes than you’ll probably ever need.

With the Braun Silk expert 3 IPL you get 250,000 flashes. Combined with the 3 cm2 flash window this means you can cover a huge total body area of 750,000 cm2. That’s enough for approximately 150+ full body treatments (full legs, bikini line, tummy, underarms and face).

That’ll see you through the start-up phase and for 10+ years of monthly top-ups across all those body areas. Braun advise it lasts 12 years. It’s more than you’ll ever need. Especially as the longer you’ve used it the less frequently you need maintenance sessions.

N.B. only the bulb life calculates the years of use. General usage and wear and tear can also determine how long the machine keeps working.

What’s it like to use the Silk Expert 3?

The Silk Expert 3 comes in a sturdy black and purple cardboard box. It clearly shows the device and which accessory it comes with. That’s either the storage pouch or the Gillette Venus Razor. The design prominently shows its FDA cleared or clinically tested.

The Gillette Venus silk expert 3 for the USA and the Braun Silk Expert 3 box for the UK, side by side.
The design and content of the UK and US boxes is very similar. Both boxes show the words “Safe and effective – Permanent visible hair removal”. This needs further explanation to set realistic expectations.

The back of the box explains the key features of the advanced skin tone sensor, gentle mode, mains-power operation and the 250,000 flashes from the lamp. The sides cover how it works, the safe skin tones and effective hair colours chart.

Both the UK / Europe and the North America messaging use the words “Safe and effective – Permanent visible hair removal”. The word permanent needs further explanation for which you need to read the user manual. Or you can learn more on IPL permanency here.

What’s in the box?

  • Silk expert 3 IPL device
  • Gillette Venus razor (IPL3001)
  • Storage pouch (BD3005)
  • Power adaptor
  • Mains connector plug
  • User manual

Inside the box, moulded clear plastic protects the Silk expert 3 device. Below that is the white power pack, country specific mains cable / plug and a grey storage pouch, all wrapped in thin clear plastic, and 2 user manuals covering several languages.

First impressions

The device itself is majority white with a matching purple flash button on the top and stripe banding round below the flash window. The head is slightly bulbous and angled slightly from the tapered end. There’s a strip of LED lights on each side, air vents underneath and a small round ‘feather’ button below the purple flash button. It’s a minimalist, sleek design that looks professional.

Side view of the Silk expert 3 with level 2 intensity illuminated on the side
The white & purple Gillette Venus Silk Expert 3 has a minimalist design and distinctive ergonomic shape that’s comfortable to hold. It’s smart and sleek.

It’s a good size, and although lightweight it feels solid. The cord fits securely in the bottom and it’s balanced as I practise different grips.

But first let’s read the user manual.

Read the user manual

The user manuals are slightly different by region. I prefer the US version as it’s a little easier to follow. It has a more logical order of information and the clinical trial results, which I find both interesting and reassuring.

There’s lots of information in the user manuals to digest. You’ll find helpful diagrams, information on how IPL works and how to use the Braun IPL device. You’ll also find instruction on caring for your device and troubleshooting any problems. It could be a bit friendlier. But please make time for it because it’s important. Start by reading the important safety information, contraindications, warnings and reasons not to use IPL so you stay safe.

N.B. The US user manual advises a start-up phase of 12 weekly treatments. The UK manual advises 4 to 12 weekly treatments, adjusting it to your needs. Some people enjoy faster results than others so it’s important you can commit to 12 weekly treatments should you need them.

Tanning & sun exposure

Braun advise not to use the Silk expert 3 on recently tanned or sunburned skin, including artificial tans. You should also avoid unprotected sun exposure by covering up after treatments and using a sunscreen of SPF 15+.

This is because your skin is extra sensitive after tanning, which increases the risk of side effects from IPL, such as burns, blisters, discolouration and scarring. Your skin is more sensitive after your IPL treatments too so there’s a higher risk of sunburn from the sun.

Braun say to wait 7 days after sunbathing before treatments, or to wait for your tan to fade. They also advise to avoid the sun for 7 days after your treatment.

Next, make sure you follow the skin patch test instructions and understand how the skin tone sensor works.

Skin sensitivity test

You don’t need to work out which intensity level is best for your skin. The Silk Expert 3 does that for you using its advanced skin tone sensor. There’s more on the skin tone sensor later.

So your skin sensitivity test is very straightforward. Following the instructions in the manual test each body area you’ll treat with 2 side-by-side flashes. If after 24 to 48 hours your skin shows no reactions you can continue with your full treatment.

Getting started

It couldn’t be easier. Here’s how you do it.

  1. Shave, cleanse and dry your treatment area.
Braun customer support advises you can wax or epilate too, but wait 2 or 3 days after waxing / epilating before your IPL treatment. This allows the hair follicle to grow a bit so giving the IPL something to target. This information is not in the user manual but is shared in the customer reviews.
  2. Set yourself up. You’ll need to be near a power socket. Try using an extension cable so you can choose the most comfortable area, like your bed, or close by to a mirror.
  3. Plug it in and the device will immediately power up in ready mode. The side-strip LEDs will light up once on each side and you’ll hear the fan start up inside.
  4. Press the handset head firmly against your skin and the power intensity indicator lights will illuminate white to show your level, from 1 to 3.
  5. Press the button to flash.

If not in use for 10 minutes, the device goes into standby mode. One power indicator light will flash on each side of the device to show it is in standby mode. After 60 minutes, it goes into sleep mode with no lights on. To activate it again, just press any button or remove and replace the power cord. It doesn’t have an on/off button, so you need to unplug it from the mains and store safely after use.

Eye safety

The Silk Expert 3 won’t allow you to accidentally flash into open air and hurt your eyes. That’s because both skin tone sensors at the side of the flash window must be covered by your skin before it’ll flash.

Close up of the Silk Expert 3 flash window
2 small sensor windows sit on either side of the flash window. You must cover both with your skin before it’ll flash. This means you can’t flash into open air anywhere near your eyes.
The flashes you see as you treat are bright but harmless. Try wearing sunglasses if you find them uncomfortable.

Many reviewers mention the flashes are intense, uncomfortable and annoying after a while. The user manual does tell you to look away for each flash. But several users comment this becomes tiresome and it’s easy to lose track of where you’ve flashed. Several think protective goggles should be provided.

Rest assured these flashes won’t harm your eyes. But if you do find it uncomfortable follow these tips:

TIPS:

  • Make sure you use it in a well-lit room so the flashes don’t seem overly bright.
  • Several reviewers recommend wearing sunglasses too. This reduces the intensity and you can keep your eyes on where your flashing too.

Egonomic shape

Loads of reviewers love the Silk expert 3 because it’s easy to handle, not too heavy and comfortable to hold.

Hand holding the Silk Expert 3 with their thumb on the flash button.
The Silk Expert 3 is comfortable in your hand and it’s easy to see the intensity indicators and nozzle end from most angles. Take some time to work out how to best grip it and manoeuvre it around your body.

You can press the flash button with your thumb or fore fingers depending on how you’re manoeuvring it. You can see the white intensity indicators from most angles. And there’s good visibility of the nozzle end so you can see where you’re placing it and moving to.

A few petite-handed users found it took a few sessions to master it. I find that’s because you need to change how you hold it frequently, for example as you move around your legs. Your grip on the device includes your thumb or finger on the flash button, so it can be awkward to stop / start as you shift positions. But you soon work out the best way.

“Very easy to use, love that it adapts to your skin tone and its not over priced. Instructions included were very easy to understand and the product itself seems to be very well made and easy to hold.” – Silk expert 3 review from Braun.com

As one reviewer comments, you have “2.7m worth of cable to play with”. The cord is long, thin and flexible. It does sometimes wind into the wrong spot, I found this most with the backs of my legs. I suggest using a mains extension socket and sitting on your bed or next to a mirror. This gives you extra manoeuvrability so the cord won’t stretch making it simple to reposition as necessary.

Safe & simple skin tone sensor

Most home IPL devices come with a basic skin tone sensor. If they detect a skin tone that’s too dark they won’t emit a flash.

The Silk expert does this too. The two skin tone sensors on either side of the flash window check your skin 80 times per second. If your skin is too dark, a power indicator light will show red on each side and the skin tone sensors disable the flashes.

But the Silk Expert 3 skin tone sensor is more advanced than that. It uses what Braun calls SensoAdapt™ technology.

When the SensoAdapt sensors detect a safe skin tone, the sensors actually choose the safest and most effective intensity level for you. And because the sensors check your skin 80 times per second they choose before every flash, for each varying skin tone on your body. All you need to do is position it on your skin.

Left side view of the Silk Expert 3 showing level 2 energy intensity is ready
The Silk Expert 3 has 3 intensity levels ranging from 3 J/cm2 to 4 J/cm2. The skin tone sensor scans your skin x80 per second and chooses the best energy level for your skin. The level it chooses illuminates on the sides. It balances safety and power with each flash. All you need do is move it along for each flash.

It has 3 intensity levels to choose from (in normal mode – more on the modes later). You’ll see the side-strip LED power indicators light up from 1 to 3, to show the chosen intensity level.

“the best feature to my mind and which gives it a well-deserved five stars, is the automatic calibration to your skin type when using, no faffing about doing your own calibrating. Supremely easy, genuine plug and go. Excellent product.” – Amazon.co.uk review for Silk Expert 3

Gentle mode

The Silk Expert 3 has a small round feather button on the top. Press this button and it illuminates to show you’ve activated Gentle mode. This reduces the intensity level so you’ll see fewer intensity indicator lights on the side. Press the button again to return to normal mode.

Close up of the 'Gentle' feather button on top of the Silk Expert 3 handset.
Press the small round feather button to activate ‘Gentle’ mode. This reduces the energy output so you’ll see fewer lights illuminate on the side. It’s good for more sensitive areas like the bikini line and underarms. If you’re a bit nervous about IPL you can also use it to get used to the treatments.
But note that you’ll get faster results on the highest intensity levels safe for your skin, so only use it if normal mode feels too uncomfortable.

Braun suggest use this mode if you’re new to IPL, perhaps a bit nervous, and want to ease yourself into the treatments. You can also use it on sensitive areas like your bikini line or underarms which can smart a bit.

Several reviewers mention the Gentle feature. Some think it a good idea but don’t feel the need to use it. Others use it on their underarms but find slower results compared to other areas like their legs. The user manual confirms this:

“Gentle mode reduces the light intensity. More treatments may be required to see the desired effects.” Braun Silk Expert 3 user manual

So, you’ll get faster results in normal mode with the higher energy intensity levels.

Glide & precision

You get the usual single flash (‘Precision’) and continuous flash (‘Glide’) modes.

For Precision you position, press and release, then re-position and repeat. Do this to control the flashes precisely and get better coverage on uneven surfaces like knees, shins and ankles.

For Glide keep the button pressed and after each flash slide (or ‘hover’) the handset over your skin to the next position. This way you don’t have to press the click the flash button down each time. It’s more comfortable as it works with your grip on the handset and reduces potential strain on your hand.

In the online reviews, a handful of people shared they weren’t quite sure how fast to slide the flash window when gliding. That’s because Glide implies a smooth, continuous motion but in fact you need to wait up to 3 seconds between the flashes. As one reviewer comments, it’s more of a ‘stutter’ than a glide.

TIP: You need to slide it along 1 cm after a flash, wait for the next flash and repeat. 1 cm is the height of the flash window therefore this gives you adjoining but not overlapping flashes.

So, is it fast to apply?

How quick is it?

The speed of application is average.

The Braun Silk expert 3 has a 3 cm2 flash window and it flashes every 2 to 3 seconds. It’s fastest on the lowest intensity level.

Lady treating her underarms with the silk expert 3 IPL
The Braun Silk expert 3 has a 3 cm2 flash window and it flashes every 2 to 3 seconds. It’s time consuming for full body treatments. Read the tips below to help make them more manageable.

This is average. On Braun.com they don’t mention the speed of application for the Silk Expert 3. I can’t find reference to how long it takes to treat a leg, and it’s not in the user manual either. But we can compare it to other devices with a similar speed such as the Philips Lumea Advanced. This takes around 14 mins per leg.

Comments from the online reviews say it takes around 20 mins to do both lower legs. Another does both lower legs, bikini line, face and armpits in 30 mins. Many who are treating larger areas say it’s quite time consuming . One specifically recommends it for treating smaller areas because of this.

It can be tedious and uncomfortable to treat your full body with a slower device. Faster options are available and they’re better suited to treating a full body in one session. Check out my favourites here. But you can avoid long and dull full body treatments with the Silk Expert 3 by following my tips below.

Tips for full body treatments:

  • Find a helpful assistant! This means you don’t have to bend and contort to reach all areas so it’s much more comfortable for you.
  • If you must go it alone try splitting your treatments into 2 sessions lasting around 30 mins each. For the first session treat your legs. And in the second finish with your underarms, face bikini line and tummy! This way you can concentrate on getting the best coverage possible, and not on how long it is taking.
  • As several online reviews mention, use the Braun Silk Expert App to plan and track your sessions so you don’t lose track of where and when you’ve treated.
  • Use an extension cable in front of a full-length mirror so you can use all the power-cord to manoeuvre around your body.

Tips for tricky areas:

From the onlin reviews, several find it tricky to activate on uneven knees and toes, bony ankles and shins, and curvy upper lip because both sensors must touch your skin. They share the following suggestions.

  • For shins, ankles and knees try turning the handset 90 degrees so it’s placed along the ridge and not across it. This also works well for hobbit-feet!
  • Squidge your toes together and place the flash window across them
  • For your upper lip try blowing out your cheeks or folding your lips in to create a flatter surface

Tips for best coverage:

A handful have trouble keeping track of where they’ve treated. I find this especially on legs when trying to work in up-and-down strips.

  • Instead, you can try working in rings around the contours of your legs, from front to back
  • Use a cosmetic pencil to mark off the sections you’ve flashed

Effort & results

You’ll need between 4 and 12 weekly treatments to complete your start-up phase. This’ll take up to 11 weeks. You should notice a change after 4 or so sessions, with hair reducing quickly after that. When you no longer see hair growing you can switch to monthly top-up treatments to stay smooth. You may need these even less frequently as time goes on.

The flash rate is rather slow on the Braun 3 IPL, and a full leg flashing takes longer than 10 minutes. So, it’s best suited to smaller body areas such as underarms, bikini line, forearms and face. For those smaller areas you’ll be done in under 30 minutes tops which is very manageable and easy to stick with.

Braun Silk Expert 3 IPL Review Summary

The Braun Silk Expert 3 is a good choice from a trusted brand. Its simple ‘plug in and go’ treatments are thanks to the advanced skin tone sensor so it’s incredibly easy to use and safe for your skin. But there are faster alternatives if you want to treat your full body or legs. Check out my favourites here.
