Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 IPL review

Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 IPL review

What is it?

The Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 uses intense pulsed light energy (IPL) to damage and disable your hair follicle, slowing and preventing hair regrowth. Periodic top-up treatments keep your skin smooth. Learn more about how home IPL works here.

First impressions

The packaging is professional, informative, attractive, compact and neat. It’s sturdy and economical too. I like that there’s very little plastic because the storage pouch keeps everything covered, clean and together.

  • Braun silk-expert Pro 5 IPL with body attachment
  • Fixed power cord and base station pack
  • Power lead and plugs (UK & Australia)
  • Precision attachment (some models)
  • Wide attachment (some models)
  • Venus razor and blade (differs per model)
  • User guide

The white and gold IPL device is sophisticated and refined. I like the clean lines, subtle curves and gold accents. It’s compact and lightweight, but feels solid, quality – exactly what you expect from Braun.

Before you start

Before you start zapping away, first read the user manual and do a skin sensitivity test.

The user manual is a quick and easy read. It’s well organised and spaced-out, with helpful diagrams. You’ll find the safe skin tone and hair colour chart, a diagram of the IPL device, a brief explanation of how IPL works, contraindications and warnings, how to use it, about your skin patch test, the treatment plan, cleaning and storage, possible side effects and a troubleshooting guide.

The user guide booklet has 13 pages of easy to read information in English.

Spend time checking the important safety information, warnings and reasons you should not use the Braun Silk-expert Pro 5. These include being pregnant, having epilepsy, taking photosensitising medications, skin conditions, on tattoos or after skin peels. Learn more about IPL contraindications here to ensure it’s safe for you.

You must follow the guidelines on tanning and sun exposure too, to keep your skin safe and avoid side effects. Braun advise:

✔️ DO

  • Wait 7 days after sunbathing before treatments, or wait for your tan to fade
  • After your treatments, avoid the sun for 7 days
  • Cover up and use a sunscreen of SPF 15+ after your treatments to avoid unprotected sun exposure

DON’T

  • Don’t use the Braun IPL on recently tanned or sunburned skin, including artificial tans.
  • Don’t use tanning booths or solariums during your treatments

In short, during your start-up treatments it’s best to avoid tanning altogether. Both by sunlight and artificially with light or creams. There’s more on tanning and sun exposure here.

Wait 48 hours after your skin sensitivity test. If your skin is normal, crack on with your first session (but avoid the test patch until your next weekly session).

Getting started

You get a Venus razor with the Braun Pro 5 IPL for a smooth shave before your treatments
A dermaplaning tool called Hollywood Browser. These tools are excellent for cutting facial hair and removing peach fuzz.
Dermaplaning: better than shaving your face!

You can learn more detail about how to prepare for your sessions here. Shave your hairs for best results, although Braun say you can wax or epilate if you prefer. And if you’ll be zapping facial or neck hairs I recommend dermaplaning as an alternative to shaving. Learn more about all of this and about dermaplaning here, and you’ll find buy links for dermaplaning tools at the end of this review.

Here’s a quick summary on how to use the Braun Pro 5, and there’s loads more detail in the following sections.

Just follow these steps:

  1. Shave before every treatment (unless there’s no hair left!)
  2. Plug in and press the flash or feather button. The 3 small intensity mode buttons shine white and you’ll hear the fan start up inside
  3. Select your intensity mode by pressing the feather button. 3 lights mean high, 2 gentle, and 1 extra-gentle.
  4. Position flat on your skin at a 90-degree angle and press the flash button.
  5. Slide to the next spot and repeat. Cover your skin in adjoining flashes avoiding overlap.

When you’re done, unplug from the mains and the Braun IPL powers down.

For this review I tested the Braun Pro 5 IPL on my full legs, extended bikini line, underarms and face. And boy is it simple, straightforward and ultrafast. It’s the fastest, safest, high-power home IPL you can buy. Here’s my feedback.

Quality & design

The Braun silk expert is a compact and elegant shape. And despite being lightweight at 285g, it feels solid and well-balanced with no creaks or cracks.

Close up photo of the quality white matt and glossy surfaces with shiny gold accent around the perfectly placed large flash button and smaller gentle mode 'feather' button. It fits perfectly in my hand.

3 photos of the Braun Pro 5 iPL with gold body attachment showing the curvy shape and smooth lines
The curvy shape and smooth lines of the Braun Pro IPL are attractive and ergonomic. The buttons on top standout against a shiny gold accent.

Even the 2 metre-long power cord feels premium. It’s fixed into the base of the device with the power pack at the other end. So, unlike the earlier models, the weight of the power pack won’t pull the cable out mid-use. There’s also a smaller 90cm cord that connects the power pack to the mains so you get the full 2-metre supple cable to play with. Use an extension cable for more flexibility.

Flexible, thick & supple. No tangles here.

The IPL lamp gives 400,000 flashes. That’s more than enough for over 200 full-body treatments of full legs, bikini line, underarms and face. So, you’ll get over 15 years’ worth of monthly full body sessions. Braun actually say the flashes should last for around 22 years. It’s superb value, you’ll never run out of flashes. You get a good 2-year manufacturer warranty too.

It’s very easy to handle around all your body, even if you have small hands. The large flash button is easy to press with fingers or thumb. And it works in a few different grips. Here’s the first:

3 photos of the Braun Pro IPL gripped snug in my palm with forefinger on the flash button.
This point-&-flash grip gives good visibility for looking in a mirror for underarms & face

This downwards grip keeps the cord out the way is best for gliding over large areas like legs or forearms, & for tricky bits around the bikini line

Flash windows

With all models, you get the standard matt-gold body flash window attachment. It measures 1cm by 3cm, so that’s a total flash area of 3 cm2. It’s an excellent multi-purpose window for legs, body, underarms and bikini line. But sometimes awkward to get a flash on your tache and jawline.

Luckily, with all models (excluding the PL5014) you also get a smaller white precision attachment. This flash window is 1.1cm wide by 1.5cm long with a total flash area of 1.65 cm2. It’s a particularly good fit on the upper lip and around the jawline. And works well on fingers and toes too. Some of the Braun Pro 5 models come with an extra precision attachment so you can use one for your face and the other for areas around your body.

Photos of the 2 flash windows with the Braun silk Expert Pro 5 IPL. the smaller white precision attachment and the larger gold body attachment.
The smaller white precision attachment (left) and the larger gold body attachment (right).

And finally, with the most expensive models, you also get a white wide flash window. This measures around 4 cm2 and covers a bigger surface area with each flash, so it’s faster to zap your torso and upper legs.

To change attachments, hold on the small lip & firmly pull the attachment away from the handle, then slide on the new attachment.

The flash bulb is part of the device and not the attachments. The attachments click into place over the top. They can feel a bit stubborn to remove at first until you get used to the pressure needed.

Power, eye & skin safety

The Braun Pro 5 IPL has 10 intensity levels and it operates at high IPL intensities, the maximum on level 10 being 6 J/cm2. This is one of the most powerful home-use devices (along with the Smoothskin Pure and the Lumea Prestige). This means, if you have light skin and use the higher levels, you’ll get longer-lasting results than less powerful devices. The lower intensities are for darker skin.

See also: See how the Braun Pro 5 and the Braun Pro 3 compare.

Rest assured, the Braun Pro 5 is clinically tested safe for home-use and it passes the necessary European manufacturing and safety standards for the CE mark. It’s FDA-cleared in the US too.

So, how does it protect your eyes and skin?

The two small blue lights on either side of the Braun Pro 5's long flash window are the skin tone sensors, which continuously check your skin tone as you move the device, and selct the best match IPL intensity before every flash.
Your skin must totally cover the 2 sensor windows at either side of the flash windows. They shine blue when in use.

You must hold the flash window flush against your skin so the two skin sensors are covered. If not it won’t flash. This means you can’t accidentally flash it into open-air anywhere near your eyes.

Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 IPL accredited by the skin Health Alliance

The Pro 5 also has reassuring independent accreditation from Skin Health Alliance because it’s skin-safe.

There’s an inbuilt UV filter. And the advanced skin tone sensor stops IPL flashes hurting your skin too. It’s also the reason why the Braun Pro 5 IPL is so darn simple and straightforward to use. Here’s what it does:

The Braun Pro 5 IPL's advanced blue sensor checks your skin tone before every flash but won't flash and with a red strip light if the tone is too dark.
The blue sensor checks your skin before every flash and won’t flash (shows red strip) if your tone is too dark (FitzPatrick type 6)
Close up photo of the SensoAdapt white intensity level indicators showing the medium intensity level chosen by the skin tone sensor.
If your skin is safe (FitzPatrick types 1 to 5) it automatically chooses the best of the 10 intensity levels for you!

This means it chooses the most powerful intensity that’s still safe for your skin tone. And from 10 increments versus 5 as with other IPL machines. This means a more precise match to your skin tone and the best possible results in the shortest time.

This clever tech takes all the faff and guesswork out of which intensity level to choose. Just plug-it-in and start zapping!

But what if it smarts too much?

Gentle modes for sensitive bits

IPL can smart a bit on more sensitive body areas like your bikini line and underarms. Luckily, Braun IPL has 2 additional comfort modes to adjust the intensity. They’re simple to activate.

3 photos showing a finger pressing the 'feather' mode mode to cycle through extra gentle (1 light), gentle (2 lights) and standard mode (3 lights)
Press the feather button to choose another mode. It defaults to standard (3 lights) when you power it on.

1 light means extra gentle mode. This chooses the lowest IPL intensity level 1.

2 lights mean gentle mode. This reduces the intensity so you’ll see fewer white indicator lights illuminated.

3 lights mean standard mode. The Braun IPL balances maximum power and safety for your skin tone.

Extra gentle mode adds further reassurance if you have darker skin. However, if safety and comfort for darker skin are your concern, you should consider my recommended devices for dark and black skin.

p

TIP: Braun suggest use the gentle mode for your first few sessions to get used to the treatments, but bear in mind you’ll get faster results in standard mode with the higher energy intensity levels.

It’s fast

The Braun Pro 5 IPL is one of the fastest high-power home IPLs you can buy. The flash rate is very fast at every 0.6 to 1.2 seconds, fastest on the lowest intensities. Keep the flash button pressed for continuous flashes in glide mode. After each flash glide the handset 1cm along your skin to the next position.

Hand holding the Braun Pro 5 IPL with body attachment in a comfortable grip for glide mode
A fast high-power IPL perfect for super-fast gliding flashes on legs with the body attachment.

You’ll appreciate how the compact and lightweight design is easy to handle at speed. It’s not quite a fluid motion – but it’s fast and manageable.

Braun say you can do both lower legs in 5 mins on the lowest intensity level. For me, it selected the higher intensities and one lower leg took just over 3.5 minutes. A meticulous full leg took me around 9 minutes.

I did my full body in just under 28 mins (full legs, extended bikini, underarms and face). That’s one of the fastest high-power IPLs I’ve tested. It’s beaten only by the Smoothskin Pure. So, if you don’t have much time to spare and speed is what you need most, this is a solid choice.

Treatment App

For this updated Pro there’s a newer, rebranded App called ‘Braun Silk-expert Pro’.

It has all the product information and ‘how to’ videos available on the Braun website. And the most helpful bit is where you schedule your sessions and reminders. The App even lets you change the frequency of your sessions to accommodate the switch to your top-up maintenance.

It helps a lot to remember and stick to your treatment plan so you get the best possible results.

What does it feel like?

You’ll hear the cooling fan whirring inside the device. And you’ll hear each flash ‘pop’.

The flashes are bright, but harmless to your eyes. You don’t need to buy specialist goggles or glasses. Use it in a well-lit room so the flashes don’t seem so intense. Sunglasses can help ease any irritation you might feel.

It feels warm and tingly against your skin. Some more sensitive areas, like ankles, thighs, bikini line and underarms can smart a bit. Hair is generally thicker and denser on the bikini line and underarms so these areas can be uncomfortable. Simply select gentle or extra gentle mode if it feels too intense. Sometimes starting with the more sensitive areas is easier.

Press the feature button on the top of the Braun Pro 5 IPl device to select gentle, extra gentle and back to standard power mode.
Select gentle mode if the flashes feel too intense on sensitive areas.

It’s really fast so you won’t get bored. But it still demands concentration because you must remember which areas you’ve flashed. This avoids too much overlap and missed hairy bits.

Skin redness is a common skin reaction to IPL. Your skin may also feel a bit hot and tingly. It’s normal and should wear off within 24 hours. You can cover it with a cool facecloth or ice pack. Cooling water sprays are good too, Aloe Vera gel or a non-scented moisturiser.

After your treatment, avoid things that could irritate the skin you’ve flashed. For example, using hot tubs and saunas, spanking, wearing tight-fitting clothing, using bleaching creams and perfumed or exfoliation products.

Avoid tanning and wear a SPF, 30+ ideally, if exposed to the sun! If you don’t you risk experiencing some of the rare home IPL side effects.

Schedule, effort & results

Home laser and IPL devices demand effort and commitment. There’s a start-up routine to get you to smooth, and then top-up sessions maintain your results. Your overall effort depends on the number of start-up sessions and how fast each session is. Therefore, I’ve calculated this effort based on my controlled tests, so you can compare and decide if the Braun Pro 5 is right for you.

Braun say you need between 4 to 12 weekly sessions to get to smooth and hairless skin. You may get there before 12 sessions but most people see significant results after 6. A whole body sessions takes around 30 mins. Therefore, over the start-up you’ll spend between 3 to 6 hours zapping.

No. of sessions (start-up) Time per session Total effort during start-up
6 sessions over 5 weeks
up to
12 sessions over 11 weeks
30 minutes 3 hours
to
6 hours

Once you’re there, switch to less frequent top-ups. These could be every 1 or even 2 months. After several top-ups, you’ll likely need them even less frequently. The Braun Pro asks for such a small amount of your time and effort for excellent results. It’s one of the best so easier to fit around your busy life.

What results can you expect?

Shave before every treatment, and /or between sessions as you need.

Our tester’s experience matches the advertised results. They noticed slower leg hair growth after 2 sessions. It got softer and lighter after session 3. They had big, smooth hairless patches after 5 sessions which made shaving super quick and without ouchie razor bumps. After 6 sessions there was very little hair left.

Once smooth, do top-ups as you need them. Shave if you need to before these. Try spacing some a month apart, and eventually increase the gap to 2 months and even further.

So far our tester says…

“I’ve now done 6 sessions and 3 top-ups 1 month apart. At first, I’d notice some hairs around tops of my ankles. So, I shaved and flashed them and now they’re no more. I’ll keep going and try dropping the top-ups to every 6 weeks. I’m smooth and shaving rash free in time for Summer. I can’t wait to get my legs out!”

p

TIP: Top-up sessions are vital with all home IPL and laser devices. Studies show the more top-ups you do, the longer-lasting your results. So, over time you need top-ups even less frequently.

The negatives

Just a few not-so-big negatives to report.

First, as mentioned earlier, the Braun Pro 5 is fast and magic on large areas like legs. However, sometimes the flash rate is unpredictable so you can glide it too far, or not far enough in between the flashes. I think this is because of how the sensors scan your skin and select the IPL intensity before each flash. Try to keep close contact to your skin to keep it consistent. It takes a little practise to find your technique and rhythm (especially if you’re used to a slower IPL device).

And next, it’s a bit pricey at full RRP. But offers around £300 and even lower are common. Check prices of the different models because they fluctuate. If it’s over £300, check out the Smoothskin Pure as a cheaper but very worthy alternative.

Philips Lumea Prestige review

Philips Lumea Prestige review

What is it?

The Philips Lumea Prestige uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) that’s safe for use on the body and face. It slows and reduces hair regrowth after each treatment. Eventually hair stops growing and periodic use will keep you fuzz and stubble free. Learn more about how home IPL works here.

First impressions

The Philips Lumea Prestige box is compact, robust, pink and well-designed to show all the key information in a concise and clear way. There’s no chance of anything moving around in transit. And it’s surprisingly heavy!

Compact, pink and attractive packaging with all the key information.

And I’m happy because nowhere do I see the word ‘permanent’. Instead, Philips say, “Prevent hair growth to feel continuously hair-free”. This still needs further explanation but it certainly doesn’t set misleading expectations like other brands do.

  • Curved-in body attachment (4.1 cm²)
  • Flat facial attachment (2 cm²)
  • Curved-out precision attachment (3 cm², BRI954 & BRI953, BRI955 only)
  • Power pack and 2 metre long cable
  • Instruction manual
  • Lumea App info slip
  • Storage pouch
  • Cleaning cloth

The device is bigger and heavier than I expect. I instantly recognise the same quality materials I love from the Advanced and older Prestige models. It’s solid. Nothing creaks or cracks when you squeeze it. It feels good to hold.

Before you start

Before you start, read the user manual and do a skin test.

The manual is a comprehensive, rather dry but easy read. You’ll find helpful diagrams, skin tone and hair colour charts, information on how IPL works, what to expect from your Lumea, instruction for your skin test, how to use it and aftercare guidance.

Photo of the Lumea Prestige user manual open at the contraindications page
Important: read the important safety information and reasons you shouldn’t use the Lumea IPL.

There’s a long list of warnings and reasons you may be unsuitable to use home IPL. These contraindications range from pregnancy, epilepsy, diabetes, and medical conditions and medications which make you more sensitive to the light. Learn more about IPL contraindications here to ensure it’s safe for you.

You must also follow the guidelines on tanning and sun exposure to avoid side effects. Philips advise you to:

✔️ Avoid the sun for 2 weeks before a treatment

✔️ Avoid the sun / tanning for 48 hours after your treatment.

✔️ Use a sunscreen of SPF 30+ on your treated skin for 2 weeks after your treatments, or cover up when in the sun.

❌ Don’t use self-tanning creams or gels as this darkens your skin.

It’s best to avoid tanning altogether, both sunlight and artificially, during your start-up treatments. There’s more on tanning and sun exposure here.

Wait 24 hours after your skin test and if there’s no reaction, you’re good to go. And it’s very easy.

When finished, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to switch it off.

For this review, I treated my full legs, extended bikini line, underarms and face. And I’m impressed with the thoughtful features and technology to make sessions faster and easier than other choices. Here’s my feedback.

Shape & design

3 photos of the Lumea Prestige in different, comfortable and easy grips

I love the Prestige’s gun-shape and futuristic yet elegant design. It oozes style and superb build quality.

I find the gun-shape more intuitive and comfortable than other designs. It feels relaxed with a secure grip on the long, tapered handle where your finger rests naturally on the trigger. Press it comfortably with your index or middle finger, or your thumb if you rotate your grip for face and underarms.

Check the controls with a glance because they are clear on top of the gun.
easy to change the flash windows by simply pulling them off andsliding back into place
Easy-to-change flash windows

It’s easy to change the flash windows too. You get different shape and sizes for specific body areas. And, from most angles, you can easily see the edges of them, so it’s precise to position for perfect coverage and no gaps.

The 2-metre long tangle-free power cord is quality. It’s thick and supple, and mostly stays out the way thanks to the long-tapered handle. The cord offers enough slack working close to a power socket, or use an extension cable for more flexibility.

The only down-side in the design is the Prestige is bigger and heavier than other brands. It weighs 560g. A few online reviewers find it too heavy and bulky for longer periods of use. However, I don’t notice it so much. It’s balanced so I can rotate and pivot my wrist without any strain, it’s easy to manoeuvre throughout and sessions are fast so it’s not tiring.

3photos of a hand gripping the Prestige in comfortable grips
The long-tapered handle gives excellent leverage and it feels balanced.

The weight comes from the rechargeable battery inside which you need to use it cordless. This is a handy feature, but if the weight worries you and you’re happy with just mains-power, try the lightweight Braun Pro 5 IPL instead.

It’s a quality, robust bit of kit from Philips that’ll last years. You also get a 2-year warranty and the lamp promises more flashes than you’ll ever need.

IPL Lamp Lifetime

There’s no need to worry about running out of flashes.

Using a standardised formula, we’ve calculated the lamp lifetime of flashes for all the devices we test. And the Prestige is one of the best.

Bar chart graph showing the Philips Lumea Prestige lifetime value compared to other devices. It's one of the best.
The Philips Lumea Prestige lamp lifetime is superb lasting 15+ years of use.

With the 250,000 flashes and 4.1 cm² body attachment you can cover a humongous 1,025,000 cm² of body area.  We calculate that’s 200+ full body treatments (full legs, bikini line, underarms and face) or over 15 years of monthly top-up treatments. That’s more than enough because the more top-ups you do, the less frequently you need them. So, eventually you can go months and months between top-ups.

p
TIP: The latest Prestige 9000 series (BRI955) give up to 450,000 IPL flashes which is a total body area of 1,845,000 cm². Woah. It may as well say unlimited flashes because with that many you’ll never run out.

It’s superb value and an excellent choice for treating your full body. You could share it and still get decades of use.

N.B. 15+ years of use is based on the bulb life only and doesn’t take into consideration general usage, battery care and wear and tear that effect how long the machine keeps working. Philips advertise a lamp lifetime of 20 years (BRI954 & BRI953 – the BRI955 is even longer!).

Power, eye & skin safety

The Prestige has 5 intensity levels and operates at higher IPL power than other devices (from 2.4 to 6.5 J/cm²). This means if you have fair skin and can use the higher intensities, it gives you longer lasting results than less powerful choices. The lower intensities are safe for darker skin.

It’s clinically-proven safe for home use and it passes the necessary European manufacturing and safety standards. It does this with some impressive safety features to protect our skin and eyes.

Close up of the bikini treatment window showing the larger flash window and smaller sensor window.
Skin sensors run around the flash window & the smaller skin tone sensor window.

To protect your eyes, you must hold the device completely against your skin at a 90-degree angle. Sensors around the flash window mean it only flashes if your skin fully covers it. Therefore, you can’t accidentally flash into open space, and potentially near your eyes.

There’s also a UV filter in the IPL flash bulb to stop UV light hitting your skin. And the skin tone sensor protects your skin too. Like most other devices, it won’t flash if your skin is too dark.

Close up of the top back of the BRI956 showing the red 'ready' light.
The ‘ready’ light shows red if the Smartskin sensor detects your skin is too dark. It won’t flash.
The 'ready to flash' indicaot illuminates bright-white when you have good contact with your skin.
The white ‘ready to flash’ light lets you know your have full contact with your skin and the intensity is safe.

And Philips have enhanced the sensor to ensure you use the correct intensity level. Activate it and it tells you the best intensity for your skin tone in 3 simple steps.

3 images showing how the Smartskin sensor works. The magnify glass button activates the sensor, the 1 to 5 intensity level indicators illuminate white in a round as it works. The 'tick' button lights-up white once it is done along with the maximum appropriate intensity indicators. Press the 'tick' button to choose it.
3 steps remove the guess-work with the advanced SmartSkin sensor to suggest the best intensity for your skin tone.
  1. Press the sensor button and place the window against your skin
  2. The 5 intensity level indicators light up in sequence as it detects your skin tone
  3. Press the check button to choose the intensity level.

It’s a reassuring safety check which takes away the stress of choosing the right intensity level. And this is especially good for you if your skin tone varies by body area or changes with the seasons.

But what I really like is that you can then adjust the suggested setting. You can’t set it any higher so your skin is always safe. But you can take it down just a notch if it stings. This is helpful on sensitive areas like the bikini line. Other devices with advanced sensors don’t have this level of precise control.

p
TIP: You don’t have to use the skin tone sensor. You can manually set the intensity using the up / down controls. The sensor still checks for a safe skin tone for the level.

Mains-power & cordless

The Prestige is the only device to work both on mains-power and cordless. I love this freedom to use it wherever you want.

Photo pushing the flexible cord securely in the handle of the Prestige to use it fast on legs using mains-power.
Fast, non-stop corded operation for large areas like legs.

It’s best to use corded for most of your body because the flashes are fast (every 2 seconds) and you won’t need to stop and recharge. This gets your pins done as quick as possible. And it’s no bother because the long handle keeps the cord out of your way as you work around your body.

Convenient cordless operation for face and hard to reach areas and bathroom privacy.

Then, simply remove the cord for smaller or hard to reach areas where the cord restricts you. I love this flexibility because you can nip into the privacy of your bathroom to zap your tache and other lady-bits. But note, the flashes are 2x slower (every 3.5 seconds) and the battery lasts around 30 minutes (or 130 flashes at light intensity 5). A full charge takes 1:40 hours. Therefore, cordless operation is no good for legs or a whole-body session. But it’s fine for smaller areas like the face and bikini line where you need fewer and slow precise flashes.

q
IMPORTANT: You must care for the battery, fully charging it every couple of months. If the battery does degrade over time, you can still use it corded.

Curved flash windows & fast

Sessions with Prestige are easy, precise and fast. It’s one of the fastest high-power IPL devices.

Used corded, the Prestige flashes every 2 seconds. Keep the flash trigger pressed and glide the large body window over your skin. The inward-curve hugs your skin for close contact and easy flashes on legs, arms and torso. There is a faster device, but I really like the steady gliding flash rate combined with the curved body attachment. It feels accurate, and it’s easy to get into a good rhythm. I don’t get bored, or lose my place because it’s fast.

Close up zapping my legs with the Philips Lumea Prestige at-home IPL.
In our test, a meticulous full leg takes 10 minutes – it’s one of the fastest!

Philips suggest a full leg takes 7 mins when used corded (and around 11.5 minutes cordless). It takes me about 10 mins per meticulously-covered full leg used corded. On my bikini line I go slower without gliding. I use the body attachment for my underarms with no problems. And the face attachment for my upper lip and chin. I can finish my whole body in 40 mins.

And I do think the curved windows make a difference. They give closer contact on curvy areas so it’s easier to get a flash. The Prestige is the only device with such curved flash windows.

The body flash window

The body window attachment is large and curved outwards to fit the contours of legs and knees
The 4.1cm2 large and curved-in body flash window for legs, arms & torso

The body attachment (all models) is a large 4.1 cm2 curved–inwards window, to fit the contours of your legs, arms and tummy / top of bikini area. By laying my legs out flat, I get a nice close contact even on my knobbly-knees, without rotating the device, stretching my skin and other general faff! The curve makes it easier to ‘glide’ over my skin too. I like this a lot, but it’s not fool proof. As with other devices, it’s still tricky to cover ankles and shins perfectly.

The precision flash window

The bikini icon identifies this attachment. The window is medium-sized and curved outwards to fit the contours of your bikini line.
The 3 cm2 bikini / precision curved-out window for bikini line & underarms.

The precision attachment (with the BRI953/4 & 9000 models) is a medium-size 3 cm2 curved-out window, which fits the contours of your bikini line where it joins your leg and the indents in your underarms. It has an extra transparent filter for increased comfort on coarse stubborn hairs.

N.B. The BRI956 and one of the 9000 series models has a separate bikini window (pictured above) and underarm attachment. The other Philips models combine these into the precision window with both a bikini and underarm icon. All are equally effective.

The face flash window

The face icon identifies this attachment. The window is a small 2cm2 and flat. It's easy to position on your upper lip and has ared filter for safe facial use.
The small flat facial window with red glass filter for safe facial use to fit upper lip and chin.

The face attachment (all models) is a small 2 cm2 flat window for precise positioning, with a red filter for safe facial use. A curved surface won’t help here, but the smaller size certainly does. I still need to pull a few faces when doing my upper lip, but it’s easy by treatment #2.

Around the tops of my inner legs / bum, I use the body and precision windows for a thorough, ‘no follicle missed’ application! The face and precision windows are easier on feet, toes and fingers (squish them together to make a larger surface). And I find the body attachment works fine on my underarms too (and as it’s bigger is a bit quicker).

Note: Some online reviewers think they’re missing glass from their body attachments. However, they’re actually designed this way.

  • The body window has NO glass filter across the flash window.
  • The precision window has a clear glass filter across the flash window.
  • The facial window has a red glass filter across the flash window.

The different Prestige models

There are a dew different Prestige models available. They’re the same except for the colour, number of IPL flashes, number of flash windows you get with each and the price. Read this short Prestige model comparison for more information and to help you choose.

What does it feel like?

You’ll hear the whirring of the fan and a soft popping sound with each flash.

Like most reviewers, I found it pain-free with just a slight, occasional sting. But it’s no way as painful as waxing, epilating or threading!

The flashes mostly feel warm against your skin. But some areas, like ankles, thighs, bikini line and underarms can smart more because they’re more sensitive. And you may feel increased heat on your bikini line and underarms where your hair is thicker and denser.

A handful of online reviewers with darker type V skin say it hurts even on the intensity suggested by the sensor. If it is uncomfortable, simply drop the intensity level just a notch or try a gentler device designed for the darkest skin.

q
IMPORTANT: It can hurt a lot if your skin isn’t hair free, if the light’s too intense for your tone, if you flash the same area more than once, or if you flash an open wound, infection, tattoo etc. So, stay alert!
IPL flashes are bright but harmless to your eyes when gainst your skin
A bright IPL flash captured on camera – harmless to your eyes when against your skin.

The flashes are bright, but harmless to your eyes. You don’t need to buy specialist goggles or glasses. Use it in a well-lit room so the flashes don’t seem so intense. Try not to look directly at the flashing end (that’s difficult I know, because you need to get good coverage!) and wear sunglasses to ease the irritation.

It takes a bit of concentration so you don’t miss any areas. And note, Philips say DON’T mark off areas you’ve done with a pen or pencil as this can cause a skin reaction.

After your IPL session, your skin may feel warm and slightly red, and prickle or tingle. It may feel dry and itch a bit too. This is normal and it wears off after a short while. Try using an ice pack or a wet face cloth to soothe it. Cooling water sprays are good too, aloe vera gel or a non-scented moisturiser. Side effects are rare but can occur (especially if you expose your skin to the sun).

Helpful App

The App is helpful too. Schedule your first treatments and it reminds you when the next are due. It’s clever enough to plan treatments for several body areas on different days, and to time these first sessions 2 weeks apart. Put simply, it takes away the hassle of having to remember when to do what.

Once you start the maintenance phase, do a top-up monthly, or if you notice any hair growth. You can steadily reduce them to 6 weeks, 2 months etc. At this point the App may not be so useful.

Effort & results

Home laser and IPL devices demand effort and commitment. There’s a start-up routine to get you to smooth, and then top-up sessions maintain your results. Your overall effort depends on the number of start-up sessions and how fast each session is. Therefore, I’ve calculated this effort based on my controlled tests, so you can compare and decide if the Prestige is right for you.

Philips say you’ll need about 4 to 5 treatments, 1 every 2 weeks (taking 8 weeks), to see significant hair reduction results. A whole-body session takes approx. 40 minutes. So, over the start-up phase you’ll spend around 3 hours 20 mins zapping.

No. of sessions (start-up) Time per session Total effort during start-up
5 sessions over 8 weeks 40 minutes 3 hours 20 mins

Then, you’ll need touch-ups sessions every 4 to 8 weeks. After several top-ups, you’ll likely need them even less frequently. I found the Lumea Prestige is one of the lowest effort home IPL machines you can choose.

So, what results can you expect?

Philips say it takes 1 to 2 weeks for treated hairs to fall out. You’ll still see hair growth in these early weeks. They’re likely hairs from new, growing follicles or hairs your zaps missed. Shave before your next treatments, and/or in between sessions as you need to.

2 to 3 sessions in (4 weeks), you should see a noticeable hair reduction. This means less and finer, lighter hairs. You must keep going and complete the full start-up phase. Shaving before your next treatments is easier as it’s finer and sparse, so no more razor bumps or rash! Ingrown hairs disappear too.

After 4 or 5 sessions (8 weeks) your hair reduction should be significant and at best, you’ll be totally smooth! This matches our tester’s results and most of the online feedback too. Learn more about results here.

The touch-ups are very important because hair eventually grows back without them. Philips also say:

“After just 8 touch-up treatments you can be hair-free for 6 months”.

Philips.co.uk

Here, they’re saying you can get long-term hair reduction with around 8 touch-ups. But, my advice: don’t get complacent and stop! Keep going so the hair doesn’t reappear. Everyone is different, so do them as you need. You may need them frequently or be able to space them as much as a few months apart.

Negatives of the Lumea Prestige

There are just a few noteworthy negatives and a few niggles with the Prestige.

As mentioned earlier, it’s weighty (560g) because of the rechargeable battery inside. But sessions are fast so it doesn’t get tiresome. If you want a fast and lightweight device (but without cordless operation) try the Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 IPL instead.

And despite the curved flash windows, it’s still tricky to get a flash on bony areas like ankles and shins. Unfortunately, this is so with most other IPL devices too.

Some online reviewers feel the storage pouch should be more luxurious for the price. But this doesn’t bother me. It’s good enough to keep the device and windows clean and dust-free. Keep and store everything in the original box to keep it together and protect it from knocks.

The zip-close white padded storage pouch protects the device and treatment windows

Keep the card board box to store everything in and keep it all together.

The Prestige is not yet FDA-cleared in the United States. However, it is clinically-proven. Philips are a respected top-notch brand and it meets all the European safety and manufacturing standards, and some voluntary standards too. It’s CE certified, so rest assured it’s safe and it works.

And finally, the Prestige is pricey at full RRP, but offers are common around £300. Prices fluctuate and it’s worth comparing with the Braun Pro 5 and Smoothskin Pure to see which is cheaper. If it’s too much, the Silk’n Infinity is a cheaper but more basic alternative, still with fast sessions.

Philips Lumea Prestige Review Summary

And now a bit more detail about the differences.

Lamp lifetime of flashes

The latest 9000 series models come with more IPL flashes from the bulb. You get almost double the flashes than the older models with 450,000 vs 250,000 flashes.

So, you may be tempted to choose a model with the most flashes because you don’t want to run out, right?

That’s understandable. However, bear in mind ALL the Prestige models come with more than enough flashes for decades of use, even with the 250,000 flash bulb. This gives you enough flashes for over 15 years of monthly whole-body zappings. But for most people, you won’t need them that frequently. That’s because once you’ve done a year of maintenance top-ups, your skin stays smooth for several months at a time, and even up to one year. So, it’s more probable you’ll need top-ups just a couple of times per year. Therefore, it’s very unlikely you’ll use up all those flashes!

I score all at-home devices 5-stars for lamp lifetime when they give enough flashes for 15+years of monthly whole-body sessions. They get top marks because it’s many more flashes than you’ll ever need. So, although the 450,000 flashes Prestige sounds far better than the 250,000 flashes model, in reality you’ll never run out with either model.

Here’s a full list of the Prestige models and the number of flashes you get with each.

Next, let’s look at the specialist flash windows you get with each model….

Different flash windows

The Philips Lumea Prestige models come with a possible 5 different flash windows. They’re similar to rival devices because they’re different sizes and shapes to better fit large and small body areas. But they’re better than rival devices for two reasons.

#1 First, most of the flash windows are curved to perfectly match your body contours. Rival devices have flat windows which can be tricky to flash on curved or bony body areas.

#2 And second, the windows have unique chips which when inserted into the device, adapt the IPL light energy to match different body areas and hair types.

Here’s a quick overview of the 5 different flash windows.

Body flash window

the Philips Lumea Prestige body flash window is 4.1cm2, in a long and tall rectangular shape. It's good to cover large areas fast, like legs, torso and arms.
The Philips Lumea Prestige body attachment is gently curved inwards, and this fits snug against the contours of legs, torso and arms to give closer contact and easier flashes versus flat flash windows. The chip in the bottom of the window inserts inside the device and configures the light energy for hair in these body areas.

This is the largest window at 4.1 cm2, and it’s gently curved inwards. It’s super for zapping lower and upper legs, tummy, torso, and arms. The chip on the flash window configures the IPL flashes to better target the body hair in these areas.

Face flash window

The Philips Lumea Prestige face flash window is 2cm2, in a short and narrow rectangular shape. It's good to cover your face and neck area with precision. The red filter focuses the light energy onto your hairs and protects your skin.
The Philips Lumea Prestige face attachment is small and flat, and fits the small upper lip area and jawline. The chip in the bottom of the window inserts inside the device and configures the light energy for your facial hair.

This is the smallest flash window at 2 cm2 and it’s flat. The smaller size best fits your upper lip area, and is easier to flash along your jawbone too. The flash window chip configures the IPL flashes for facial hair and has a red filter over the window too. This focuses the light energy onto your hairs and protects your skin.

Bikini flash window

The Philips Lumea Prestige bikini flash window is 3cm2, in a long and narrow rectangular shape. It's good to cover your bikini line area with precision. The transparent filter focuses the light energy onto the stubborn hairs in this area for a more comfy sensation.
The Philips Lumea Prestige bikini attachment is gently curved outwards and closely fits the contours around your bikini line for easier flashes versus flat flash windows. The chip in the bottom of the window inserts inside the device and configures the light energy for the stubborn hair in this bikini area.

This medium-size 3 cm2 flash window is curved outwards to fit the contours of your bikini area. The chip configures the IPL flashes and there’s an extra transparent filter on the window, for increased comfort and effect on these coarser, stubborn hairs.

Underarms flash window

The Philips Lumea Prestige underarms flash window is 3cm2, in a short and tall rectangular shape. It's good to cover your underarm indents and curves with precision.
The Philips Lumea Prestige underarms attachment is gently curved outwards and closely fits the contours around your underarms for easier flashes versus flat flash windows. The chip in the bottom of the window inserts inside the device and configures the light energy for the hair type in this body area.

This medium-size 3 cm2 flash window is curved outwards to fit the contours of your underarms. The chip configures the IPL flashes for the hair type in this area.

Precision flash window

The Philips Lumea Prestige precision flash window is 3cm2, in a long and narrow rectangular shape. It's good to cover your bikini line and underarm areas with precision. The transparent filter focuses the light energy onto the stubborn hairs in these areas for a more comfy sensation.

This dual purpose, medium-size 3 cm2 flash window is curved outwards to fit the contours of both your underarms and bikini line. The chip configures the IPL flashes and, like the bikini attachment, there’s an extra transparent filter on the window, all for increased comfort and effect on coarse, stubborn hairs. Both the bikini and underarms icons are on the side.

👉 All models have the large body and small face flash windows. Then some models also have either the precision window, or the individual bikini and underarms windows.

Here’s a quick list to confirm which:

Model

Small flat face
Medium curved-out underarms
Medium curved-out bikini

BRI950, BRI945, BRI944

Do you need all the windows?

Well, honestly no. You don’t need them all.

The star of the show for me is the large body flash window. Coupled with the comfy gun-shape, it really makes all the difference vs rivals on legs and tummy. That’s because it hugs your curves, is large yet precise and makes it super-easy to get a flash. It also does a good job on underarms and bikini line.

The large curved-in body attachment with the Philips Lumea Prestige is magic on legs & tummy!
I love the curved in body flash window for easy and precise leg zapping!

The face attachment is important too, with the red filter and more precise size and shape for the uneven and smaller facial areas. And you can use this for smaller areas around your bikini line and underarms too where you may need more precision.

And I do rather like the idea of the extra specialist windows, with filters and flashes to better treat stubborn bikini spider-legs and underarm hairs. And it’s a clever marketing strategy by Philips because models with these extra windows tend to be more expensive. But in reality, the Prestige works equally well without them and you’ll still get excellent results. So, the cheaper BRI950, BRI945 and BRI944 models with just the body and face flash windows give you everything you need to treat your full body for excellent results.

The essentials: Large curved-in body & the small flat precision window (with all models)

Quality & lamp lifetime

Photo of the Lumea Prestige and Braun Pro 5 boxes side by side with lifted lids.
Compact, neat and attractive packaging for both, but the Braun IPL has less plastic.

Both devices have neat, attactive packaging with clear, concise information and comprehensive user manuals. Philips are just a tad more comprehensive around tanning and shaving vs waxing.

And both have a storage pouch. I prefer the Braun’s because it stores everything, including the powerpack and cable. This means less protective plastic in the packaging ♻. You also get a Venus razor with the Braun Pro 5. That’s a nice extra to ensure you get a super-smooth shave.

p

TIP: Don’t throw away the boxes! Store the devices in them and in a draw to protect them from any knocks and bumps

The materials and build-quality of both are excellent – the best you can buy. They feel solid, robust and expensive. Even the 2 metre-long power cables with each are excellent quality. They’re thick and supple and won’t tangle or twist. And the handle shape of each device keeps the cord out of the way. So, you don’t get tied up in knots.

Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 both have strong and supple cords, but the Prestige's is detachable.
Thick, supple, quality mains cables stay out of the way and don’t tangle.

The power cable on the Braun Pro 5 is fixed into the device so the weight of the power pack won’t pull it out as you work (the previous models problem).

The Prestige has a different cable design, so the power pack isn’t an issue. It’s a snug, secure fit which easily detaches too. And that’s because you can also use the Prestige cordless. More on that later.

And there’s no need to worry about the flashes running out either. The lamp lifetime is superb for both devices. Here’s how they compare:

My score: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The latest 9000 series Prestige models have the most amount of flashes and can treat the most surface area of your body. But all these devices and models score 5 out of 5 stars from me. The reason being ALL give you many more flashes than you’ll ever need.

Each gives plenty flashes for over 15+ years of monthly full-body top-up sessions. And it’s very unlikely you’ll need these continuous monthly top-ups. That’s because once you’ve done around a year of maintenance top-ups, your skin stays smooth for several months at a time, and even up to one year. So, you’ll probably only need a couple of top-ups per year! Therefore, you’ll never use up all those flashes!

Both devices come with a 2 year warranty and UK 100-day money back guarantees. Read the Braun T&Cs here: Braun UK & Ireland Pro 5 IPL money back guarantee, and buy the Prestige from CurrentBody UK for a 100 days guarantee.

Shape & design

The shapes are very different, and therefore, so is how you manoeuvre and grip each device.

The Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 are very difference in shape, size and profile.
The shape, size and ergonomics of the devices are both quality but very different

The Prestige’s gun-shape is intuitive. It feels relaxed with a secure grip on the long, tapered handle, which also gives excellent leverage. The trigger is easy to find because there’s a braille-like flower on it. Press it comfortably with your index or middle finger, or thumb if you rotate your grip. The controls and the flash window are easy to see.

But it’s much heavier than other devices at 560g. That’s because of the rechargeable lithium battery inside. However, the gun-shape is perfectly balanced and secure to grip. I find there’s no strain as you rotate and pivot your wrist. It’s comfortable and easy to work around your body.

Photos showing the various comfortable grips of both the Braun Pro 5 and Prestige IPL devices
Each device feels very different. But both are intuitive, ergonomic, comfortable, and easy to position.

In contrast, the Braun Pro 5 IPL is compact and light-weight. But not flimsy. The sleek wand-shape is well-balanced and fits perfectly in your hand. At just 285g there’s no risk of strain or tiredness. It’s easy to manoeuvre around your body. The flash button is large and easy to press. There are varied grips suited to different body areas. But it’s very comfortable to handle.

The controls on the Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 are both clear and simple, bubt the Prestige has more buttons because it's manually controlled.
The easy to operate and see at a glance controls on top of both devices.

Both are superb – the best available. But for me, the gun-shape of the Prestige is slightly more comfortable and easier to use.

Corded vs cordless

The Braun Pro 5 works on mains-power only. This means you get non-stop operation and can finish your zapping in one session without need to recharge any battery. Get yourself set up comfortably with privacy, a mirror and an extension cable. Off you go.

The Prestige works on mains-power. But it gives you extra flexibility using it cordless too.

Side profile shots of the Braun Pro 5 and Prestige in hand side by side showing the Prestige without the mains power cord.
The Prestige also works cordless for small, awkward or private areas. You get around 30 mins of battery.

Just remove the cord for smaller and/or hard to reach places. So, you can nip into the bathroom, lock the door and zap that ladytache. Or flash your bits. Literally.

However, you get only 30 mins of power from each battery charge. Therefore, it’s best suited for small areas only.

Power & safety

Both devices have a similar IPL intensity range and both have impressive safety features. Here’s a quick Philips Lumea Prestige vs Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 comparison of the two:

The Lumea Prestige with a power range of 2.5 to 6.5 J/cm² and the Pro 5 IPL with a range of 3 to 6 J/cm², are the highest-powered at-home IPL devices available. So, they’re super choices if you have light skin and can use the highest levels. That’s because the higher levels give the fastest, longest-lasting results after the start-up regimen. you’ll still need top-ups, but less frequently than with lower powered devices.

The Braun Pro 5’s 1 to 10 white intensity level indicator lights. They illuminate to show which level the sensor has selected.

The Prestige has 5 intensity levels in that range. But the Braun Pro 5 has 10. This means the Pro 5 has more increments for a more precise match to dvaried skin tones I to V on the Fitzpatrick rage. And selecting the right one is easy too, because of the advanced skin tone sensor.

Both have advanced skin tone sensors

To recap, both the Braun Pro and Prestige are safe for light to dark skin, but not the darkest. And their skin tone sensors protect darker skin.

Like other skin tone sensors, they check your skin tone and won’t flash if it’s too dark. But they also do more to keep you safe, albeit in slightly different ways.

The 2 small skin tone senors on the Braun IPL (left) and the single sensor on the Prestige (right) won’t flash and illuminate red if your skin is too dark.

The Prestige recommends the best of the 5 intensity levels for your skin. Place on your skin and press the 🔎 button. The skin tone sensor checks and highlights your best skin tone intensity. This takes the stress out of choosingyour intensity. And on more sensitive areas you can still manually lower it a notch too.

Close up photo of the skin tone sensor button and manaual up / down arrows to control the intensity levels on the Lumea Prestige.
On the Prestige: The magnify glass button activates the sensor, and you can manually control the intensity with the up / down arrows.

The Braun Pro 5 auto-selects the best of the 10 intensity levels, before every flash. It’s the perfect balance of power and safety in every flash, straightforward and simple. And a neat feature if you have different tones across body areas. All you need do is position and zap.

If it feels too intense you can select one of the gentle modes. Gentle mode shifts it down a few intensity levels, and extra gentle drops it to the lowest level (1).

Close up photos of the white intensity indicators and gentle mode button and lights on the Braun Pro 5.
On the Braun Pro 5: The sensor scans and selects the best of the 10 intensities before every flash, and the gentle modes reduce the intensity.

I think the Braun Pro 5 is best if you have varied skin tones across your body areas. Because there’s no need to faff about with checks and levels. It does it all for you.

Flash windows

There are various models of the Prestige and Pro 5 IPL, and they come with different flash windows. The Prestige has total 5 different windows and the Pro 5 IPL has 3 different windows. Prestige large vs Pro 5 IPL standard flash windows: Both excellent for zapping large areas.

All these flash windows are varied shapes and sizes to better fit different body areas. But the Prestige’s flash windows are even better for 3 reasons:

#1 Two of the flash windows have added clear or red filters in the flash window to adapt the light energy so it’s more comfortable on face and coarse, stubborn hair in bikini areas.

#2 Most of the windows (excluding the facial window) are also curved to better fit your body contours. This makes it easier to get a flash, and works particularly well with the large body attachment for fast and easy leg zappings.

#3 And lastly, all the windows have unique chips which, when inserted into the device, adapt the IPL light energy to match different body areas and hair types.

There’s no comparison data showing how much more comfy or better results are with these features. But they do sound rather special (which I guess is the point). However, the contour hugging curves do make it easier to flash and get thorough skin coverage.

All the Prestige models come with the large curved body and small flat face window. Some models also have either the medium size precision window for both bikini and underarms, or the separate bikini and separate underarms flash windows. Check out this Lumea Prestige models comparison to see which model has which.

All the Pro 5 IPL models (excluding the PL5014) come with the medium-size standard and the small precision/face flash window. Some also have the wide flash window, and the rest have the wide and an additional precision flash window which you can use on your bikini line. Check out this Braun Pro 5 IPL models comparison review to see which model has which.

Do you need all these flash windows?

Probably not.

Both devices’ flash windows work well. But really, you get everything you need with both the Pro 5 and Prestige models that have a larger window for body areas and a small window for face and uneven areas, or where precision is important (e.g. bikini area).

The medium-size 3cm2 (1 by 3 cm) and small 1.65cm2 (1.1 by 1.65 cm) flash windows with the Braun Pro 5 IPLare the important ones, and all you really need to zap your full body.
The most important flash windows with the Braun Pro 5 IPL models
The large curved 4.1 cm2 (1.5 by 3 .5 cm) and small 2 cm2 (0.8 by 2.5 cm) flash windows with the Philiops Lumea Prestige are the important flash windows, and all you really need to zap your full body. The curved leg window makes flashes easy and consistent.
The most impoartant flash windows with the Lumea Prestige. The bikini/precision window is handy, but not essential.

The Pro 5 IPL wide flash window gives slightly faster coverage on upper legs and torso. However, it’s still fast to cover these areas with the 3 cm2 standard flash window. The standard flash window is also easier to position and flash on lower legs, so I prefer to keep zapping it on my upper legs too, rather than stop and swap to the wide window. It’s easy on bikini line, arms and underarms too.

You can also opt for a Pro 5 model with two precision flash windows, if you fancy. You can use one on your face and the other on your bikini line. But unless you have a skin condition you want to contain, there’s really no need for two identical flash windows.

With the Prestige, I like the idea of the added filters and configured flashes for hair types, but in practice I don’t feel any difference in sensation when using them by body area. But I do love those body-hugging curves, especially on legs. They make close skin contact so it’s easier to glide and flash. It even helps on knobbly knees!

I love the large, curved-in body attachment on the Prestige. Easy flashes on legs, arms, torso and underarms.

It’s possible to zap your underams and bikini line with a combo of the large body and the smaller face window too. However, the medium-sized curved-out precision or bikini attachement (both the same shape and with the added clear filter) does come in handy, especially on the bikini line. But it’s not essential.

In summary, with both devices you don’t need the extra flash windows, especially if there’s a big difference in price. A larger body and smaller face flash window do the job very well indeed.

Which gives the fastest treatments?

Both are fast and super choices for treating large areas or your full body, but the Braun Pro 5 IPL is fastest. Here’s a quick comparison:

Speed of sessions comparison

Prestige

Pro 5 IPL

Face, small bits, legs & large areas

Face, small bits, legs & large areas

Flashes every 2 seconds

Flashes every 0.6 to 1.2 seconds

Steady & consistent flash intervals

Flashes slow slightly at first

Then flash rate varies depending on skin contact

10 mins per full leg (high)

40 mins for whole-body

9 mins per full leg (high)

27 mins for whole-body

For both devices, keep the flash button pressed for continuous flashes as you glide the flash window along your skin.

With the Braun Pro 5 IPL on the highest intensity levels, I can do a thorough full leg in around 9 mins, and my full body in 27 mins. It has slightly faster flashes and a smoother gliding motion over your skin. than the Prestige.

However, the speed of the flashes can vary a bit. This is determined by skin colour, (it’s faster on the lower IPL levels) and also how close the sensors are to your skin. If it’s not totally flush, the flashes come a little quicker. So, you need to keep good contact to keep the flashes consistent. Otherwise, you can glide too far or not far enough in between flashes. It takes a tiny bit of practise.

With the Lumea Prestige, on the highest intensity level, I can do a thorough full leg in around 10 mins, and my full body in under 40 mins. I find on legs it’s a smooth, quick glide motion where you need to pause slightly for each flash. It makes for a controlled, consustent glide-and-zap rhythm.

There’s not much in it. You can easily finish a full body session before getting tired or bored.

Photo of the Braun Pro 5 and Prestige showing the difference in size
The Prestige flash repetition rate suits the size and ergonomics of the device. The Braun is small and lightweight and can be manoeuvred at speed to match the flashes.

The shape and design of both devices matches their speed and maneouvrability. The Braun Pro 5 is small, light-weight and handy so you can keep-up with the fast flashes. The Prestige combines precision with slightly slower flashes matching the weight and bigger gun-shape design. You need concentration with both to ensure full coverage with no gaps and missed hairy bits!

The Prestige and Braun Pro 5 IPL are amongst the fastest home IPL devices you can choose. But if speed is most important to you, the Braun Pro 5 is the clear winner.

Treatment schedules & results

Use the Prestige for 4 or 5 sessions, 1 every 2 weeks (taking up to 8 weeks) to get smooth skin. A whole-body session takes around 40 minutes.

Use the Braun Pro 5 between 4 to 12 weekly sessions until you have smooth, hairless skin (typically 6 sessions). A whole-body session takes around 30 minutes.

During your start-up phase, you’ll notice hairs grow slower, softer, finer and lighter after a few sessions. Shaving is easier without vicious stubble, rash or ingrown hairs. Eventually bald patches appear and get bigger. You may see these results very quickly, or slower and more gradually over the course. And speed of results can differ by body area too.

Then, switch to top-up sessions. With both the Prestige and the Pro 5 IPL you’ll need these every month or two. It’s very important to stick with them. If you do, and after you’ve done several, you’ll find you can go many months between top-ups.

Both the Prestige and Braun Pro 5 IPL devices are amongst the lowest effort at-home devices to get and maintain smooth, hair-free skin. With a bit of organisation, both are easy to commit to for silky smooth skin results.

Philips Lumea Prestige vs Tria 4X laser

Philips Lumea Prestige vs Tria 4X laser

The Philips Lumea Prestige use intense pulsed light energy (IPL), and the Tria 4X uses strong laser energy to damage and disable your hair follicles, slowing and then stopping hair regrowth. Periodic top-up treatments keep your skin smooth. Learn more about how home laser & IPL works here.

Quality

Both devices come in neat boxes that are professional, attractive and have all the important info clearly visible. They’re compact and secure with minimal plastic. The Tria stands out for the small details, such as the small ribbon tab inside the box.

The Prestige also comes with a thoughtful storage pouch to protect it from dust and scratches. But hang on to the boxes so you can protect the devices from knocks when stored in a draw. The instruction manuals with both are clear and informative.

Both the Tria 4X and the Lumea Prestige are beautifully packaged, premium devices. The boxes are perfect to protect and store your devices. I especially love the beautifully designed Tria instruction booklet and protective padded pouch with the Prestige.
The Tria 4X laser and the Philips Lumea Prestige tucked up inside their boxes.

They’re both well-made and with a gun-shape. But they look and feel very different.

The Prestige looks expensive, futuristic, elegant and feminine all at once. The Tria 4X isn’t as sexy (but has bags of personality).

The quirky Tria 4X feels robust enough. It’s white smooth plastic with a slight sheen. It doesn’t creak or bend but the long handle feels a bit hollow. However, I like the pink silicone-type grip and the fluted flat bottom, so it stands up on its own.

But when it comes to build quality, the Prestige is a clear winner. I love the white a rose-gold colourway, craftsmanship and detailing. The materials are top-notch and although it’s plastic, it feels solid, expensive and doesn’t creak or crack. The Tria 4X feels a bit clunky compared to the Prestige, however both are well-designed for the way you move and operate them.

How many flashes?

You’ll get plenty of zappage from each device too.

The Tria 4X Laser keeps zapping until the lithium battery inside eventually degrades. The Prestige IPL bulb has a finite number of flashes before it runs out.

Let’s look at the Prestige first.

The Prestige IPL bulb gives loads of flashes – the earlier models give 250,000 and the newest models 450,000 flashes. Both give plenty, enough for over 15 years of monthly whole-body sessions. And that’s way more than you’ll ever need, because after you’ve done monthly top-ups for 12 months, most people stay smooth for several months at a time. So, you’ll need much less frequent top-ups, possibly just 1 or 2 per year!

Close up photo of a hand holding the large 4.1 cm2 body flash window from the Lumea Prestige BRI956
The large 4.1 cm ² body flash window with the Prestige means you can cover your body quickly in fewer flashes.
p

TIP: Although the Prestige with 450,000 flashes sounds far better than 250,000 model, in practice you’ll never use up all the flashes with either. So, both the older and newer Prestige models may as well say unlimited flashes because it’s super unlikely you’ll ever run out.

The Prestige is excellent value and will give you decades of smooth skin all over your body.

The Tria 4X laser is different because it’s a laser. The total number of treatments you get is down to the spot size of the laser and the number of charging cycles you get from the lithium battery. It won’t work on mains-power so it stops working once the lithium battery eventually degrades.

Close up photo of the 5mm small laser aperture, the charging cable input and the charging cable.
Teeny laser aperture & 500 pulses per charge – best for face and small body areas with zaps for several years.

The laser aperture on the Tria is just 5 mm small in diameter and each charge cycle gives you between 500 and 600 pulses. That’s enough to zap your face (upper lip and jaw) and another small area such as underarms. Tria say you get at least 300 battery charge cycles from the battery And if you charge the battery regularly, you’ll likely get many more. So, with at least 300 charging cycles, and if treating small areas only, you’ll get just over 2 years of monthly sessions.

p

TIP: the Tria 4X user manual says the minimum expected service life of the Tria is 3 years. Charge it every month or so even if the device isn’t in use. This means you’ll get at least 300 charge cycles from the battery, and probably more.

And as per the Prestige, it’s very unlikely you’ll need continued monthly sessions with the Tria 4X. After the start-up stage, and a few top-ups, you’ll need maintenance sessions much less frequently. So, the Tria 4X laser will get you to smooth keep it that way for several years.

And, the laser energy is more powerful than the Prestige’s IPL. So, it does more damage to the hairs so results are longer-lasting. Because of this, you’ll likely need fewer top-up sessions and possibly fewer session overall before you get long-lasting smooth results.

Shape & design

Both devices have a gun-shape but feel very different and with a different movement over your skin too.

The Tria 4X is comfortable to grip on the long fluted silicone-coated handle. There’s no trigger to press, so you can wrap your fingers securely around the narrowest part of the handle and feel no strain. The weight is in the teardrop shaped head so it’s slighly top-heavy but easy and intuitive to manouevre whilst holding at a right-angle to your skin. The LED screen’s on top and the laser aperture is easy to position and see.

A photo of a left hand holding the Tria 4X in a comfortable grip around the long handle. A photo of a right hand holding the Prestige in a comfortable grip.
Both feel very different to hold, each with a specific action to cover your skin.

It weighs 600g, because of the lithium battery inside. This is the heaviest of all home, hand-held devices. However, it’s still easy to handle on smaller areas. The weight and alignment perfectly suit the small and precise movements needed to cover your skin.

The Prestige’s gun-shape is more nimble and intuitive. It feels relaxed and balanced with a secure grip on the long, tapered handle. The trigger is easy to find because there’s a braille-like flower on it. You can press it comfortably with your index or middle finger, or thumb if you rotate your grip. The controls and the flash window are easy to see.

It too is heavy at 560g. That’s because it also has a rechargeable lithium battery inside. However, the gun-shape is perfectly balanced and secure to grip, so you can rotate and pivot your wrist without any strain. It’s very easy to position and work around your body.

Both devices are very simple and straightforward to control through buttons on top of the device.
Close up photo of the Tria 4X 5 mm small laser aperture and the large 4.1cm2 flash window of the Lumea Prestige
Teeny 5mm laser aperture on the Tria 4X and large 4.cm2 flash window with the Prestige

The Prestige works both cordless and on mains-power. The power cable is 2 metres long and high-quality which doesn’t twist or tangle. I love that it’s ready to plug-in and go without waiting for a charge. Use it mainly on mains-power then switch to cordless for tricky to reach areas, or using in the privacy of your bathroom on your tache or lady garden.

The Tria works on battery power only so there’s no cord to get in the way. It takes 2 hours to charge the battery and each charge lasts between 25 and 30 minutes or 500 to 600 zaps.

Power & safety

Both devices are clinically-proven safe and effective for home-use. The Tria 4X also has FDA-clearance. Here’s a comparison of the power and safety features with both:

Both the Tria 4X and the Prestige have 5 intensity levels. 1 is low and 5 is high, but because the Tria 4X is a laser, it’s much more powerful than the Prestige.

5 intensity levels each, but the Tria is 3X more powerful than the Prestige!

The Tria 4X is around 3 times more powerful than the Prestige.

  • The power density output of the Tria 4X ranges from 7 to 22 J/cm2.
  • The Prestige ranges from 2.4 to 6.5 J/cm².

The Tria 4X is the strongest of all home-use light energy hair removal devices. And it’s widely acknowledged that the stronger intensity the better your results, so it follows that the Tria 4X promises the longest-lasting results of all home-use laser and IPL hair removal systems. This means, although you’ll still need top-up sessions, you’ll likely need fewer or much less frequently overall .

Sounds great! Loads of people choose the Tria 4X over any IPL hair removal systems because it’s most powerful. They want the best possible results in the shortest time. However, it’s not the best choice for treating large body areas. You can learn more about this later.

To protect you, both devices have a skin sensor around the flash window and laser aperture. They won’t flash unless they detect your skin covering the entire window. This means it’s not going to accidentally flash into anyone’s eyes.

And to protect darker skin tones, you get a skin tone sensor with both too.

First you must unlock the Tria by using the skin tone sensor on the bottom of the handle.

The Tria 4X sensor is on the bottom of the handle. Place it on skin in your treatment area and it checks for a safe tone to unlock the device. All intensity levels are safe for Fitzpatrick types I to IV. It’s up to you to choose your most comfortable intensity level. More on that later.

The skin tone sensor in the flash window won’t flash on too dark skin, and checks and suggests your best intensity for you.

The Prestige sensor is a bit more advanced because you must not use the high IPL levels on darker skin. The sensor is the small window above the larger flash window. It also checks for a safe tone and flashes red if it detects a tone that’s too dark (Fitzpatrick type VI). It periodically checks your skin tone during treatment too.

And it has an additional helpful feature called Smartskin Sensor too. Press the magnifier button and it checks then suggests the best IPL level for your skin tone. But you stay in control, and can adjust it down a notch if it feels too intense.

Do they hurt?

This depends on the individual. But based on the available user feedback it’s fair to say there are more reports of pain with the Tria 4X laser.

Some reviewers say the Prestige is painful, but most of these have darker skin tones. TIt’s described as an uncomfortable tinging sensation, but that’s much more bearable than waxing or epilating. And many more say it’s pain-free.

For the Tria 4X however, it’s notably different. For a start, Tria call the intensity settings “comfort levels”.

Uhoh.

A notable number of both positive and negative reviewers say it HURTS. The pain varies but it’s a hot topic in the online feedback.

So, why does it hurt more than the Prestige?

Just like the Prestige, the Tria laser targets melanin in the dark hair follicle. But the Tria’s higher intensities create much more heat and thus damage. It’s this increased heat which means it can hurt.

The high intensities can hurt! A clinical study says they are 2 to 3 times better than the lower intensities but the lower ones still work!

Some reviewers use Tria’s SmoothStart Calming Gel, or the cheaper alternatives ice or lidocaine gel to numb their skin. Overall, the pain-factor feedback is a much bigger percentage compared to the Prestige and other home IPL reviews.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to know if you’ll feel pain. But be aware it’s possible and weigh this up in your decision.

Legs & large areas?

The Tria 4X is painfully slow and difficult to cover large areas. Each zap covers 5mm, you need several charges and high levels of concentration and precision. It’s not suited to large body areas.

The Prestige is designed to fit your contours and is fast to cover large areas. Each flash is quick and covers a large area, and mains-power means non-stop operation. It’s perfectly suited legs and large areas, as well as small.

The Tria 4X covers a tiny 5mm area each pulse.  Because it’s such a small movement, you must have a close-up view of the treatment area. Therefore, you’ll need a helpful assistant for backs of legs and knees.

And the battery is limited to 30 mins of use (or 500 to 600 zaps). One full leg needs 2 to 4 charging cycles so could take a total of 10 hours including charging time! This means you need a way to track or mark off where you’ve zapped. Then wait 2 hours for it to charge and pick up where you left off.

For large areas like legs or torso it takes a lot of time, organisation and commitment to complete your treatments. But it’s manageable for small areas done in 30 minutes.

Table with the following data - underarms: 100 pulses & 4 to 5 mins per side, bikini: 200 pulses & 8 to 10 mins per side, upperlip: 25 pulses & 2 to 3 mins, upper leg: 600 pulses & 25 to 30 mins per side, lower leg: 600 pulses & 25 to 30 mins per side
User manual table: Pulse count and time for different body areas.

It’s easy to treat your face and underarms by yourself. A very thorough bikini line requires some bending and twisting, or a friendly assistant. And you can treat your face and a couple of small areas with one charge e.g. your upper lip, chin, jawline and a pair of underarms or both sides of the bikini line.

So, what about the Prestige?

The Prestige demands far less time and efort than the Tria (even on small areas)

The Prestige is the perfect choice for face, small and large areas or full body treatments done in one session. It takes me 35 to 40 minutes for the whole lot (using corded with mains-power).

And that’s because it has some special features.

Firstly, there’s no need to wait for the Prestige to charge. Use it non-stop with mains-power and finish a full body treatment in one sitting. Swap to cordless just for tricky, hard to reach areas or on small areas in the privacy of the bathroom.

Second, it’s got different size and shape flash windows ranging in size from 2 cm2 to 4.1 cm2. Waaay bigger than the Tria 4X. Some are curved too (no other device has these). They fit the contours of your body so it’s much easier to get good contact and a flash without any fuss. It’s easy to ‘glide’ over your skin too. I love the large curved-in body window because it’s perfect for legs,knobbly-knees, and torso (bum too!)

The different size, shape and curved flash windows, unique with the Prestige!

And finally, it’s fast to cover your skin in flashes so you won’t get bored or lose your place. It flashes every 2 seconds on level 5 (when corded). Keep the trigger pressed and slide the Prestige over your skin the height of the flash window each time. The curved attachment makes it easy to get a flash. It’s just awesome for your legs. I can meticulously cover a full body in around 40 minutes.

And with a bit of twisting, bending and a full-length mirror you can see and reach most body areas by yourself i.e. backs of legs and knees.

It’s one of the best choices for large areas or full body treatments done in one session.

Treatment schedule & results

First, let’s check the start-up regimen for both.

Use the Prestige for 4 or 5 sessions every 2 weeks (taking up to 8 weeks) to get smooth skin. Then less frequent touch-ups every 4 to 8 weeks to maintain your results.

Use the Tria for 8 sessions, one every 2 weeks, or until you’re satisfied. It takes up to 3 months to see significant results. Then you can do touch-ups or additional treatments as you need them.

It can take a session or two to see any change. After between 2 to 5 sessions you’ll see a gradual reduction in the number and thickness of your hairs. Hair grows slower and becomes finer, softer and lighter too. You’ll need to shave less frequently. Bald patches start to appear until all your skin is silky smooth.

Both devices give permanent hair reduction, but Tria say after a total of 12 sessions their results are permanent. You can learn more about this permanent statement here.

With both devices you must do the start-up and several top-up sessions for long lasting results. Stop before and the hair grows back. You’ll likely find you need top-ups much less frequently after you’ve done several sessions.

Prestige vs Tria 4X summary

Prestige for all body areas and Tria 4X for face and small areas

Consider the Tria 4X if you have fair skin and want your longest lasting results, but on face or small body areas only. And if you don’t care if it hurts. Consider the Prestige for darker skin tones (up to fitzpatrick type V) and if you want to treat small and/or large body areas and face. It’s fast, precise and one of the most powerful home IPL devices, and a top recommendation. It’s also a better choice on smaller areas if you don’t have much spare time, because you’ll be done in a matter of minutes, versus up to 30 mins with the Tria 4X.
