And you get twice as many flashes too, 300,000 with the Xpress. It’ll provide over 15 years’ worth of full body treatments and retailing below £200, that’s exceptional value. It’s one of the best no-frills choices available so keep reading to see if you’ll love it.

Suitable skin tones and hair colours

skin-tone-hair-colour-chart

You can use it on black, dark brown, brown, dark blonde hair and light to mid brown skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types I to V).

Don’t use it on light blonde, red, grey or white hair and dark brown, brownish black and darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin type VI). Don’t use it on freckles and moles.

Silk’n don’t use the Fitzpatrick scale, they just say it’s safe to use the Xpress on all but the naturally darkest skin complexions. And their advice around suitable hair colours is confusing. The website says you can use it on all hair colours but results aren’t certain e.g. “Red, white, grey and blond may show some response, but may require more treatments”. This is vague and confusing and lowers our rating a bit.

If your skin is dark and your hair is fair, don’t take your chances with the Xpress  – try this device. Clinical tests prove it works on fair hair and it’s safe for all skin tones.

Tanning guidelines

You can’t use the Xpress on the high intensity levels on tanned skin or after recent sun exposure. You should avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks before your treatment. If you’ll be in the sun, protect recently treated skin with sunscreen (minimum SPF 30). Do this for 2 weeks after each hair removal session.

However, intensity level 1 is the lowest energy level and it’s safe to use before and after sunbathing. So you can use the Xpress on level 1 on tanned skin. It’s a good choice for summer month top-ups.

Please note: This assumes you’ve already used the Xpress at the highest level suitable for you to reach your best results. It assumes that level 1 intensity level is enough to maintain these results. Results vary by individual. Levels 2 to 5 are not suitable to use on recently tanned skin or immediately before sunbathing / sun exposure.

Is the Silk’n Glide Xpress good value?

Silk'n Glide Xpress device flash button and 2.7cm2 application window

The Silk’n Glide Xpress is compact and affordable, and the flashes will last around 15 years of use. It’s exceptional value.

Yes. The treatment window is 2.7 cm² and you get 300,000 flashes. This means you can cover a maximum treatment area of 810,000 cm². That’s the same as about 200 full body treatments (full legs, bikini line, underarms and face). It’s enough to last about 15 years of monthly top-up treatments!

That’s plenty of treatments, more than you’ll ever need. Its price is very competitive too, so it’s an exceptional value choice.

N.B. I’ve used only the bulb life to calculate the years of use. General usage and wear and tear can also affect how long the machine keeps working.

What’s it like to use the Silk’n Glide Xpress?

First impressions are good. The compact rich-blue box has a white slide-off sleeve showing all the key information including the suitable skin tones chart.

The small white and blue Xpress device and the white power pack lie in the neat, protective grey zip-up storage case. It’s tidy, compact and portable.

What’s in the box?

  • Express Hair Removal Device
  • Deluxe Carrying Case
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Power Cord and adaptor
  • User Manual

The no-frills hand-held unit has a simple design and shape. It’s straightforward and whilst compact in size, it’s still robust and comfortable to hold. The power cord looks long enough and it fits securely in the base of the device.

“It’s lightweight but doesn’t feel cheap and is fairly easy to work with and was very quick and easy to use as well.”
Influenster reviewer

Read the user manual

It’s the same user manual as for the other Silk’n Glide models. A few more diagrams and layout improvements would make it easier to digest, but you’ll find it covers everything it needs too. The USA equivalent Flash&Go Express has a much clearer user manual.

Please note there’s at least one error too. The manual says, “Best results will be reached when you shave 3 days prior to the treatment or when the hair is 1-2 mm”. This is wrong as acknowledged by the Silk’n European support team. You must shave immediately before your treatment.

This poor instructional information knocks our rating a bit.  Despite this, give it a read. Pay close attention to the list of warnings and safety precautions to see if you should not use the device. Then follow the instructions for your skin sensitivity test.

Choosing your intensity level

Silk’n says combine your skin sensitivity test and choosing your best intensity level. The user manual doesn’t include an intensity level guide, so it’s below for your reference.

This skin tone and hair colour chart is available on the packaging but not in the user manual. Here, Silk’n show it’s suitable for light blonde, red and grey hair. However, their website states that results MAY be possible with more treatments. So be aware results on lighter hair aren’t guaranteed or quick.

For your skin test: Shave first, use the skin tone sensor then simply start at the lowest level (1) and flash your skin. If that’s comfortable, move up a level and repeat (on a different spot). Stop if it becomes uncomfortable or painful. Wait for 1 hour and if there’s no reaction continue with your treatment at the highest level that was comfortable. Do this for each separate area you want to treat.

Getting started

The Silk'n Glide Xpress gives 200 full body treatments (full legs, bikini line, underarms and face). It’s enough to last about 15 years of monthly top-up treatments!

The Silk’n Glide Xpress gives 200 full body treatments (full legs, bikini line, underarms and face). It’s enough to last about 15 years of monthly top-up treatments!

Please be safe: Before using always read the user manual.

It’s very easy to get started and as most reviewers comment, it’s super-simple and fast to use!

  1. Shave and make sure your skin is clean, dry and free of lotions and deodorant.
  2. Set yourself up. You’ll need to be near a power socket. Try using an extension cable so you can choose the most comfortable area, like your bed, or close by to a mirror.
  3. Plug it in and simply press the power button to move up the levels and the indicator lights around the button show the selected level.
  4. A ‘ready’ light will blink when it’s in full contact with your skin.
  5. Press the flash button and the skin tone sensor checks your skin tone. It’ll flash only if it reads a suitable tone. When it flashes, you’ll hear a ‘pop’ sound.

The flashes are bright, so don’t look directly at them. Make sure you use it in a well-lit room, but avoid vanity mirrors that can cast shadows across your skin. Try wearing sunglasses if the flashes are too much.

Skin tone sensor & safety

There’s a small sensor window next to the light exit window. This is the skin tone sensor and it checks your skin at the start of your treatment and periodically throughout your session. It won’t flash if your skin tone is too dark.

It will only flash when your skin fully covers the skin tone sensors. This protects your eyes by preventing accidental flashes directed into the open air near your eyes.

Treatment modes

The Xpress has 2 standard treatment modes; stamping for a single flash (called Pulse) or continuous flashes (called Gliding).

“This device was super easy to use, lightweight, and totally pain free!”
Influenster reviewer

Gliding is more comfortable to hold when treating larger areas like your legs, and application is fast from around 8 mins per leg.

Use Pulse mode to cover small areas and uneven surfaces. Place the device on your skin, press and release the flash button. Then position on the next spot and repeat. Look for the gentle pressure marks on your skin to use as guide marks for the next position.

Gliding makes it more comfortable to hold when treating larger areas like your legs.  Position the device on your skin and press and hold the flash button. Then, keeping good contact, slide it over your skin a small space at a time. Try to move it just the height of the flash window, to get good coverage in time with the flashes.

How quick are the treatments?

So you can compare it, let’s see how long it takes to treat a pair of underarms.

It has a 2.7 cm² treatment window and it flashes once every 1 or 2 seconds dependent on the intensity level used. So, to treat a pair of underarms (an area roughly 120 cm²) it’ll take from around 44 seconds up to 1:29 minutes. that’s good.

It’ll take from around 8 mins to treat a full leg. Silk’n say you can treat your full body in under 20 minutes. Some reviewers say it was more like 30 mins, but that’s still fast. The Xpress gives the fastest application times in the Silk’n range and it’s a sound choice for treating your full body or large areas treated in a single session.

Tricky bits and helpful tips

Close up of the 2.7cm² application window and skin tone sensor

The small skin tone sensor window next to the flash window checks your skin colour and will only flash if it’s in a safe range. But it’s awkward to position and activate on your upper lip.

The online reviews report a few tricky bits when using the Silk’n Glide Xpress. I’ve listed them here for ease of reference.

  • There’s no smaller treatment window for small and uneven areas. It takes a bit of practise to activate a flash on areas like shins, knees and ankles. But you’ll soon get the knack.
  • It’s awkward to position on the small upper lip area. Try blowing out your cheeks or sucking in your lips to make it easier.
  • There are a few reports that the device won’t flash. Silk’n advise you to ensure there aren’t any shadows cast on your skin which cause the sensor to disable the flashes. Avoid using it with a bright vanity mirror.

The Silk’n App

The Silk’n app provides access to the relevant Xpress user manual, and has more information about the other Silk’n devices.

But it’s best for helping you track which body parts you’ve treated. It reminds you when your next one is due which is great is organisation is not your strong point. You can get an overview of all your treatments on a monthly calendar planner too. It makes sticking to the start-up schedule that little bit easier!

What do online reviews say?

Just a few Silk’n Glide Xpress reviews come from UK users, and the negative reviews stand out more than the positive. This could unfairly put you off. So, I’ve provided an overview of reviews from US customers too, for the identical device from Silk’n called Flash&Go Express.

From all the collated online Flash&Go Express and Silk’n Glide Xpress reviews, it scores a very good 4.1 stars.

User score 4.1 stars

Let’s start with the lower-rated reviews – what do they say?

The bad bits

A few users find it difficult to get the device to flash. It’s not clear if this is down to faults or user error but this accounts for a handful of low ratings.

Some share they don’t have the results they expect. A couple waited less than 2 months, so they should try for longer.  Another 8 did try for longer, leaving reviews ranging from after 3 to 8 months of use.

Silk'n Glide Express reviews score it 4.1 out of 53-star neutral reviews are common. Some have delayed hair growth after prolonged use, but haven’t yet reached a permanent hair-free state. And others have mixed experiences, with better results on some body areas versus others.

Most of the neutral reviews say it works. You need patience because results are slow to appear. US reviewers mostly report this, which could in part be due to the instruction in the user manual. It tells you to start your first treatment on the lowest setting and move up a level on the next treatments. As one reviewer puts it, this “seriously sets back the advertised result timeline” because the Xpress is most effective on the higher intensity levels.

And there are lots of positive reviews. Here’s what they have to say.

The good bits

Silk'n Glide xpress device and power cable inside the grey storage case.

The sturdy storage case and cleaning cloth that come with this no-frills model are small but convenient touches that reviewers love.

Most US reviewers of the Flash&Go Express got it free of charge in exchange for their honest review. The reviews seem genuine and are helpful and informative.

They love the simplicity of use. It’s comfortable to hold and easy to use. It’s virtually painless and is quick to apply. Reviewers like the compact, portable design that make it a convenient travelling buddy. And the protective zip-up storage case and cleaning cloth are two little touches that make a big difference.

The Silk’n app gets some love too. It reminds you of your intensity level and when your next treatment’s due for each different body area.

Loads of reviews report good results too.

The start-up phase takes a total of 14 weeks to complete. You start with 4 treatments at 2 week intervals (this takes 6 weeks), then a further 2 treatments at 4 week intervals. You’ll need top-up treatments to maintain your results too, as and when you see regrowth.

Several reviews say it works but don’t say how long it took to see results. Some see results from just the first, second and third treatments. For most, it takes around 4 treatments (6 weeks) to see hair reduction results. This ranges from a ‘slight’ up to an impressive 80% reduction in hair.

Some reviews report better results on some body parts than on others. But there’s no distinct pattern – it differs by review.

“after 3 or 4 treatments I have absolutely noticed that my hair has become finer and has taken longer to grow back, I am thrilled with being able to shave less and not deal with the bumps and cuts that sometimes come with shaving.”
Silkn.com reviewer

“I’m loving my Silk’n Flash & Go Express. There’s several reasons why I’d recommend it to friends and family… first, the device actually works! I’ve finished with my 8th treatment session last week and the difference in hair growth is amazing. The hair on my legs has virtually quit growing and what’s left is super fine and very sparse.”
Influenster reviewer

Many advise you to stick with the schedule to get good results. And they encourage that the results increase over time. They report hair regrowth is softer, finer and lighter than before. Hair grows slower and slower and eventually bald patches appear. They need to shave less frequently too. Some shave just once a week now, verses the tedious daily shaving required before using the device.

Before you decide, let’s see what the alternatives are.

What are the alternatives?

In the USA and Canada? Try the Flash&Go Express 300,000 from Silk’n.

If budget is the deciding factor, a usually cheaper alternative is the Fuschia coloured Silk’n Glide 150,000. It has the same compact design  and is a fine choice if you want to treat small body areas like underarms and bikini line. But it’s twice as slow to apply which makes big difference if treating your legs or full body. If you can stretch a little bit further, I think the Xpress is worth the extra cash.

You should also consider the Smoothskin Bare. It’s different, in a very good way; it’s no-frills but has unlimited flashes, it’s affordable at around £200, has even faster treatments and you get excellent support from Smoothskin. Online reviewers say it’s “a massive game-changer when it comes to hair removal” – read the full review here.

Should I buy the Silk’n Glide Xpress?

Silk'n Glide Xpress device flash button and 2.7cm2 application window

Yes. If you want a straightforward, no-frills IPL machine this is an affordable, great-value choice.

It’s not perfect. It’s let down by poor customer support, website and instructional information. And there are relatively few UK and European customer reviews to rely on. But the equivalent model in the US enjoys high praise. It’s a smart investment and great value for money, with over 15 years’ worth of full body treatments. That’s probably more than you’ll ever use. It’s straightforward to use and the application time is fast, one of the fastest from this type of compact model.
